Charlie Hunnam played Nathan Maloney in the original British Queer as Folk, Russell T. Davies’s drama set in Manchester’s gay scene. Nathan’s age made the character unusual in the series’ 1999 context, according to Davies; that is a statement about the character and the creator’s perspective, not about Hunnam himself.
Which Queer as Folk featured Charlie Hunnam?
Hunnam appeared in the original British series, created by Russell T. Davies—not a later production that shares the title. Apple TV’s series listing identifies Hunnam as Nathan Maloney and describes the story in the context of Manchester’s gay scene. Apple TV’s catalog entry
The title has been used for more than one series. Channel 4 describes its later series as a reimagining of the British original, so the version matters when looking up the cast or story. Channel 4’s series information
Who was Nathan Maloney, and why was the role significant?
Nathan is a 15-year-old gay character in the 1999 story. Reflecting on the series, Davies told Channel 4: “When I wrote Queer as Folk, there was the 15-year-old Nathan Maloney, and back then, to write about a 15-year-old gay boy, he was remarkable.” In a later Channel 4 interview, he called Nathan “an outlier.” These are Davies’s retrospective assessments of the character’s place in the series and its context; they should not be treated as independent statistics about television or society. That context helps explain why Nathan can be described as controversial or significant without sensationalizing the character or confusing him with the actor. The age detail belongs to Nathan’s story; it is not a statement about Hunnam’s personal life or views.
What did Davies say about the series’ approach?
Davies said of his writing, “I didn’t want it to be a lecture,” in The Guardian’s making-of retrospective. The comment describes his stated creative intention; it does not establish Hunnam’s views or experience. The Guardian’s making-of feature
