What Sony bought—and when
Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) and Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired WildBrain’s approximately 41% interest in Peanuts Holdings LLC. Sony announced an agreement on December 19, 2025, subject to closing conditions. Sony Group Corporation reported the acquisition complete on March 3, 2026. The completed transaction, rather than the earlier agreement, is the current state. Sony Pictures’ December 2025 announcement and Sony Group’s March 2026 completion notice describe the two stages.
How Peanuts ownership is structured
The stakes below are in Peanuts Holdings, the parent company of Peanuts Worldwide LLC. Sony’s holding is indirect through its subsidiaries.

Sony reported a purchase price of approximately C$630 million (approximately US$460 million), subject to customary working-capital and other adjustments. The US-dollar figure used Sony’s reference conversion of C$1 to US$0.73. Sony Group’s completion notice gives the transaction figures.

Who manages the Peanuts business?
Ownership and brand administration are separate layers. Peanuts Worldwide LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Peanuts Holdings, continues to manage the Peanuts business and rights. Sony says SMEJ leads management of Peanuts Holdings in partnership with SPE. Sony’s majority stake therefore does not mean that Charlie Brown or the individual characters are employees, or that Sony Pictures alone administers every Peanuts activity. Why the headline uses Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown is one of the characters created by Charles M. Schulz for Peanuts. The comic strip debuted on October 2, 1950, in seven newspapers. Sony describes the franchise as spanning comic strips in print and digital formats, shows and specials on Apple TV, consumer products, attractions, events and social media. Its acquisition is about the company holding the brand, not a literal employment change for a character. Sony Pictures’ release provides the debut and franchise context.

How the Sony partnership developed
The 2026 deal changed an ownership arrangement that began with a 2018 strategic partnership. At that time, SMEJ indirectly acquired 49% of DHX Media’s 80% Peanuts interest, leaving DHX Media (later WildBrain) with 41%; the Schulz family held the remaining 20%. Sony Creative Products had represented Peanuts in Japan since 2010, according to WildBrain’s account of the 2018 partnership. In 2026, Sony acquired WildBrain’s remaining interest and consolidated Peanuts Holdings as a Sony Group subsidiary.

Sony has described the franchise’s existing reach across entertainment, publishing formats, products and live experiences. The ownership change places a larger share of the company behind those activities within Sony’s group; it does not, by itself, establish a new show, film, product, or change to where a particular title can be watched. Sony’s release says Peanuts shows and specials are available on Apple TV, but it does not verify current availability of individual titles or any specific retailer listing.
