She has spoken about suppressing what she called the “gay part” of herself while growing up in Missouri, finding room to acknowledge it after moving to Los Angeles, and later finding confirmation in falling in love with a close friend. In 2025, she put that identity plainly into words while discussing her song “The Giver”: “Yes, I’m a lesbian.”
Roan describes coming out as a process, not one dated announcement
Available reporting traces a progression in Roan’s understanding and public expression of her sexuality. It does not establish a particular day or appearance as her formal coming-out announcement. The distinction matters: Roan has discussed her identity directly, but the accounts point to experiences and changes over time rather than one defining public moment.
In a September 2024 profile, The Guardian reported that Roan began acknowledging her sexuality after moving to Los Angeles in 2018. Rolling Stone UK later described her as having lived openly as a queer woman in Los Angeles and noted her more recent lesbian identification. That account distinguishes her earlier queer self-understanding from how she has since described herself.
Growing up, she pushed down what she felt
Roan has described growing up in Missouri with little access to a queer community and struggling to recognize her own sexuality. In The Guardian interview, she recalled: “I pushed down the gay part of myself so deep because I was like, that can’t possibly be me.”

Her account helps explain why the story is about recognition and self-acceptance as much as a public label. The Guardian reported that moving to Los Angeles in 2018 helped her begin to acknowledge her sexuality; it did not identify that move as a precise coming-out date.

At a Grammy Museum conversation in November 2024, Roan spoke about falling in love with her best friend. As reported by Teen Vogue, she said the experience gave her confirmation that she was “not a fraud for saying I’m gay.”

“I’m so grateful that that happened because one, for the first time I got confirmation that yeah, I am not a fraud for saying I’m gay. And two, what an incredible person to fall in love with for the first time. Your best friend who you think is awesome and hilarious.”
She was describing what the relationship meant to her, not announcing a newly chosen identity. Her words connect falling in love with a feeling of certainty about being gay.

- What is documented: Roan has spoken about suppressing her sexuality while growing up, acknowledging it after moving to Los Angeles, and feeling affirmed by falling in love with her best friend. She has also explicitly said “I’m a lesbian” while discussing “The Giver.”
- What is not established: The reporting cited here does not identify an exact date or event as her first public coming-out announcement. It is more accurate to describe a journey and a series of statements than to assign one.
For listeners who want to follow the musical thread, The Guardian and Rolling Stone UK both discuss The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in the context of Roan’s rise and artistic identity. The album offers context for her work, but no purchase is needed to understand her account of coming out.
