Season three moves the semi-autobiographical sitcom into the summer of 1989, where first love and adolescent embarrassment share space with the family’s football troubles. Its coming-of-age stories are the real attraction; the less engaging boardroom scenes are the main reservation.
What happens in season three?
Set in the summer of 1989, the season follows Alan as he settles into teenage life. Sleepovers, swimming lessons and nights out bring fresh opportunities for awkwardness, while his crush on Jake gives the story a first-love thread. At home, Alan’s father Graham is under pressure from fans as Northampton Town drops into division three.
That split between adolescent life and football-family stress gives the sitcom its shape: Alan is trying to work out who he is in a household and community where his father’s public role carries its own demands. The season’s queer coming-of-age story is grounded in that setting rather than treated as a separate issue.
Oliver Savell is the season’s strongest asset
Tech Advisor reviewer Jon O’Brien’s 19 November 2025 review makes Savell’s performance the central reason to watch. Savell plays teenage Alan with recognisable mannerisms without reducing him to an impersonation. The result is a character who can be funny in moments of embarrassment while still feeling like a young person figuring out first love and growing up queer in a masculine football environment.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The comedy also benefits from its specificity. O’Brien praises the plentiful jokes in the two episodes available to him for review, along with music and period details that help establish the late-1980s setting. Those observations make the season feel rooted in a particular youth and place, not simply dressed in nostalgic references.
Family affection, masculine expectations and the football plot
The relationship between Alan and Graham gives the season more than a sitcom clash between father and son. Graham’s love for Alan is clear, but it sits alongside expectations shaped by the masculine culture around football. That friction gives the coming-of-age material emotional texture: Alan’s growing independence plays out in a family where affection and pressure can coexist.

The football-management side is less consistently compelling. O’Brien’s main reservation is that the boardroom scenes feel routine beside the sharper adolescent comedy. They provide context for Graham’s strain and Northampton Town’s fortunes, but they are the part of the season least likely to linger in the memory.
Should you watch Changing Ends after The Celebrity Traitors?
Yes, if you want a warm, awkward coming-of-age sitcom with a distinctive lead performance. Carr’s visibility after The Celebrity Traitors may bring new viewers to the series, but season three works best when judged on its own terms: Savell’s portrayal, the comic detail of teenage life, and the way Alan’s queer adolescence intersects with family and football culture.

O’Brien recommends the season, while stopping short of calling it a classic because of the boardroom material. His review is one critic’s assessment, not a definitive measure of the show. Rotten Tomatoes’ season-three listing showed three critic reviews when accessed on 8 October 2026: Carol Midgley of The Times and Anita Singh of The Daily Telegraph each rated it 4/5, while O’Brien rated it 4.5/5. That is a small set of reviews, not a broad critical consensus or an audience score.
