Chamak is worth considering if you want a fictional Punjabi music-world thriller led by a strong cast and driven by an unusually prominent soundtrack. Its music is the clearest strength; the murder mystery and scattered subplots are less consistent. This is a drama inspired in part by real events, not a documentary or factual account of singer Amar Singh Chamkila’s killing.
What is Chamak about?
The first season follows Kaala (Paramvir Singh Cheema), an aspiring singer who returns from Canada to Punjab. As he pursues a music career, he also seeks answers about the killing of Tara Singh (Gippy Grewal), a celebrated Punjabi singer. The music ambitions and the investigation are intertwined: the series uses the Punjabi music world as the setting and substance of its drama, rather than as background decoration.

Coverage of the series connects its fictional premise to the killing of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot. Rohit Jugraj fictionalizes that inspiration; Chamak should not be treated as a retelling of their case. Scroll’s review discusses that connection.

What works: the music and the cast
A soundtrack with range
The songs are part of the show’s identity and help carry scenes when the narrative wanders. In his 11 December 2023 review for The Indian Express, Suanshu Khurana praised the soundtrack’s range across rap, folk, Sufi and Punjabi film-song forms, writing, “Every song comes from a deeper, interesting space and is worth a listen.” Deepa Gahlot’s Scroll review, published 7 December 2023, likewise found that the music kept the story engaging despite unrelated subplots.
The Apple Music listing identifies the original-series soundtrack as a 15-song, 46-minute digital album released on 23 November 2023 by Sony Music Entertainment India Pvt. Ltd. It credits contributors including Vikram Montrose, Manpreet Singh, Krood X, Bhai Manna Singh, Sunny M.R., Jatinder Shah, Channa, Parth Parekh and Kulshan Sandhu.

Performances that give the drama texture
Cheema’s casting is one of the series’ most persuasive choices. Gahlot called it “inspired,” and noted the work of supporting performers including Manoj Pahwa and Mohit Malik. Isha Talwar and Mukesh Chhabra are also among the cast; Malkit Singh and Mika Singh make special appearances, according to Scroll. The ensemble helps give the story’s music-industry setting a lived-in feel.
Where the story loses momentum
The reviews do not converge on an unqualified recommendation. Gahlot praised the music and casting but found that unrelated subplots diluted the narrative. Khurana described the series as a “middling mishmash,” while India Today’s 7 December 2023 review called it entertaining but lacking spark. The Times of India’s season-one review offered a more favorable assessment of the mystery and performances.
Rank #3
The result is uneven dramatic drive: the soundtrack can hold attention, but it does not always make the investigation feel tightly paced or fully satisfying. Season one ends with Kaala facing a formidable opponent as he finds his musical direction. Gahlot found the mystery’s deferral to another season disappointing. That is a limited spoiler; the larger point is that viewers looking for a neatly resolved revenge thriller may find the season’s payoff incomplete.
Who is likely to enjoy Chamak?
- A good fit: Viewers drawn to Punjabi music, an ensemble cast, and a fictional drama that makes songs central to its world.
- A qualified fit: Thriller fans willing to accept subplots and an uneven pace in exchange for atmosphere and music.
- Probably not the right choice: Viewers seeking a documentary, a biographical account of Chamkila and Amarjot, or a mystery that wraps up cleanly within its first season.
Does season two change the picture?
SonyLIV’s current season-two synopsis says Kaala is dealing with the aftermath of the Peer Ka Mela events, while guilt-ridden Pratap takes him under his wing and announces his debut single under Teeja Sur. It also says Kaala continues investigating his parents’ killers and uncovers a surprising lead. That description indicates the music career and investigation remain linked, but it does not establish whether season two resolves the first season’s open questions.
