Celebrity Homes Linked to Ghost Stories: What’s Actually Reported

Hollywood ghost lore connects several former celebrity homes to apparitions, but the reported spirits are often unidentified. Here are the strongest cases and their limits.

There is not reliable evidence for eleven homes haunted specifically by the ghosts of dead celebrities. The stories most often blur three different things: a famous person’s former home, an unidentified apparition said to be there, and a claim that the celebrity’s own ghost returned. The strongest documented examples are folklore, not proof. Here are the cases the reporting supports—and what each story does and does not say.

What qualifies as a celebrity-haunting story?

This is a narrower question than which famous homes have ghost stories. A home may be linked to a celebrity because they lived or died there, while the alleged presence is unidentified or attributed to someone else. The entries below distinguish the former resident from the reported ghost, identify who relayed the claim, and note whether the original property remains.

The available reporting does not substantiate eleven distinct homes haunted by dead celebrities. Rather than count weak matches as if they met that standard, this account focuses on three comparatively strong cases and one related celebrity-home story that does not identify the ghost as the former resident.

Three stronger matches—and their limits

George Reeves’s former Benedict Canyon home

Actor George Reeves, known for playing Superman on television, reportedly died at his Beverly Hills-area home in 1959. A 1995 Los Angeles Times report attributes the haunting claim to historian Laurie Jacobson and recounts anecdotes of activity in the room where Reeves was found. The story identifies the alleged ghost as resembling Reeves, making this a closer fit than accounts involving an unknown presence.

Those are reported anecdotes, not independent verification of a haunting. The circumstances of Reeves’s death have been disputed; the ghost story does not resolve those disputes, and they should not be treated as settled by it.

Falcon Lair, Rudolph Valentino’s former mansion

Silent-film star Rudolph Valentino’s Beverly Hills mansion, Falcon Lair, became associated with stories that his ghost appeared there. The Los Angeles Times account describes the legend and reports claims associated with Valentino’s ex-wife Natacha Rambova and later owner and actor Harry Carey. These accounts belong to Hollywood lore; they do not establish that Valentino’s ghost was present.

The mansion was bulldozed in 2006. It is therefore a former site tied to a haunting legend, not a surviving house readers can visit.

Pickfair, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks’s former estate

At Pickfair, the estate shared by silent-film stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Pickford reportedly described strange attic noises and a dark woman figure. The Los Angeles Times also recounts a later ghost story associated with the property and says former owner Pia Zadora attributed demolition in part to that story. Crucially, the reported figure was not clearly identified as Pickford or Fairbanks.

The original mansion was largely razed and replaced, so the old estate should not be presented as an intact, accessible haunted house.

A related story that is not a dead-celebrity haunting

The former Cass Elliot home in the Hollywood Hills

Actor Dan Aykroyd said that while living in a Hollywood Hills home once owned by singer Cass Elliot, he experienced mysterious voices, jewelry that moved, doors that opened and closed, and a dark figure. The Los Angeles Times feature reports Aykroyd’s account, but it does not establish that Elliot’s ghost caused the events—or even identify the presence as her.

This is a celebrity-associated home story, not evidence that a dead celebrity haunts the house. Keeping that distinction clear avoids turning a reported experience into a claim the source does not make.

Why the list does not reach eleven

Several other stories appear in coverage of haunted Hollywood homes, but they do not meet the title’s precise premise. Paul Bern was found dead in the Beverly Hills home he shared with Jean Harlow; a later story recounted by the Los Angeles Times concerns an apparition Sharon Tate reportedly saw when Jay Sebring owned the house. That does not identify the ghost as Bern or Harlow.

At Greystone Mansion, reports of sounds, smells, and shadowy figures are associated with the 1929 murder-suicide of Ned Doheny and Hugh Plunkett. It is a death-linked legend about a historic property, not a clear story of a famous entertainer haunting a home. A 1995 Los Angeles Times roundup also mentions a local claim that Ozzie Nelson appeared at his former home, a “chilly spectral visitor” at Joan Crawford’s former home without identifying the visitor as Crawford, and spirits at James M. Cain’s and John Schlesinger’s former residences without naming those spirits as the former residents.

Marilyn Monroe sightings tied to a cabana mirror are associated with the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, not a home. Counting a hotel room as a house would change the topic rather than fill out a defensible list.

What a ghost story can—and cannot—tell you

A famous person’s residence or death at a property is a historical claim that can be documented separately from a haunting. A ghost sighting is a report by a witness or a story repeated later; without independent evidence, it remains folklore. Even a story that explicitly names a celebrity as the spirit does not verify the claim.

The Winchester Mystery House illustrates how a property’s history and accumulated legend can reinforce each other, but it is not a dead-celebrity case. Its official history describes a 160-room, 24,000-square-foot landmark and notes paranormal reports as part of its reputation: Winchester Mystery House history. HISTORY’s 2025 account says the story that Sarah Winchester built to appease spirits arose during her lifetime; linguist and author Karen Stollznow says direct evidence that she received spiritualist instructions is lacking: HISTORY’s examination of the Winchester legend. The comparison is useful because it separates the documented property from the later explanations attached to it; it does not confirm paranormal activity at Winchester or elsewhere.
