Brazilian dentist Rafael “Rafa” Puglisi died on September 18, 2023, aged 35. His family said he hit his head while entering a swimming pool during his usual morning swim. Contemporary reports said his death certificate listed traumatic brain injury; police separately registered the death as suspected and requested forensic examinations. Those reports describe different parts of the case and do not establish a final investigative finding.
What happened to Rafael Puglisi?
In a family statement shared on social media, Puglisi’s relatives said he was preparing for his usual morning swim when he hit his head as he entered the pool. UOL reported on September 18, 2023, that the death certificate shown by the family listed traumatic brain injury. The family’s statement included the words “Rafa acabou batendo a cabeça!”—“Rafa ended up hitting his head.” That is the family’s account, not a police reconstruction of the incident. Why was the death classified as suspected?
CNN Brasil reported on September 19, 2023, that police said Puglisi was found dead near the pool and recorded the case as “morte suspeita” (“suspected death”). The São Paulo public security authority said forensic examinations had been requested from the Instituto Médico Legal (IML) and the Instituto de Criminalística (IC). The report did not give a definitive police reconstruction of how the fatal injury occurred. CNN Brasil’s report describes the classification and requested examinations.
CARAS Brasil explained on September 20, 2023, that this classification was applied procedurally to non-natural deaths, and reported that the investigation was assigned to the 2º DP de Barueri. In that context, “suspected” described how the death was registered for investigation; it was not, by itself, evidence of wrongdoing or a conclusion that the family’s account was false. CARAS Brasil’s explanation provides that context.

What is known about the investigation’s outcome?
The reports cited here establish that forensic examinations were requested and identify the police station assigned to the case, but they do not establish a final investigative disposition. Without a reliable later account of that outcome, it is not possible to say whether authorities ultimately confirmed or rejected the family’s description of the pool incident.
Who was Rafael “Rafa” Puglisi?
Contemporaneous Brazilian coverage described Puglisi as a dentist known for treating celebrities. CARAS Brasil reported that he was clinical director at Instituto Odontológico Guy Puglisi. These are descriptions attributed to the reporting, rather than independently audited credentials.
