There is no reliable basis here for naming ten celebrities who chose family over fame and ten who “dropped” their families. The available accounts show something more complicated: some performers have changed how or where they work to make room for parenting, while others have described painful family estrangements. Those are not opposite sides of a simple moral ledger.
What “family over fame” can mean in real life
Putting family first does not necessarily mean quitting a career. It can mean choosing projects around a child’s school calendar, relocating, or reducing work for a period. The examples below are tied to what the people themselves said, and to when they said it; they should not be treated as permanent rules about their careers or as proof that every family member experienced events the same way.
Julianne Moore: arranging work around family
In a 2011 interview with The Guardian, Moore said she tried to work in New York or during the summer so her family could join her. “The days of doing a film where I need to be away for months during the school year are over,” she said. That describes how she was managing work and family at the time—not a retirement from acting or a statement about her schedule today.
Kate Jackson: a reported change in priorities and location
Parade reported in 2026 that Jackson, speaking at a Charlie’s Angels anniversary panel, said motherhood influenced her decision to step back from acting and directing and leave Los Angeles to spend more time with her son. The report quoted her saying she did not think she could be a good director and a good mother at the same time, and that being a good mother mattered more to her. This is a retrospective account reported by Parade; it supports describing a family-related career and location change, not declaring that she abandoned her career or fame.

Bing Crosby: one daughter’s account of family life
In a 2014 American Masters interview, Bing Crosby’s daughter Mary Crosby described her father moving the family outside Los Angeles to raise them in a different environment. She recalled that he was partially retired, that they spent time together in Mexico, and that they often ate meals as a family. She also said her older half-brothers were kept at a distance and acknowledged that accounts of their father differed. Public figures who have described family estrangement
“Dropped their families” assigns blame and motive that the accounts here do not establish. A more accurate description is that some people have spoken publicly about ending contact or creating distance. Their statements explain their own experiences; they do not, by themselves, establish every relative’s perspective or the full history of a relationship.

Heather Graham: ending contact with her parents
In an interview published by The Guardian on April 28, 2025, Graham said she had severed contact with her parents, whom she described as “judgmental, authoritarian.” She reflected on recognizing that she could ask herself what she wanted and make herself happy. Brooke Shields: a boundary within a family and a career
Shields’ story is a useful reminder that family and professional life can be intertwined. An AARP profile describes her transition away from her overprotective mother-manager. That supports discussing a change in a complicated family-work relationship; it does not support labeling Shields as someone who abandoned her family.

Why the two halves of the original framing do not balance
A person who adjusts work to raise a child has made a career choice; a person who ends contact with a relative has set a relationship boundary. Neither fact, without more, establishes a simple choice between family and fame. Reduced visibility is not proof of retirement, and estrangement is not synonymous with abandonment. The accounts also differ in date, source, and point of view, so they cannot fairly be ranked as equivalent examples in a ten-versus-ten list.
