The clearest public examples include Leah Remini, Paul Haggis, Jason Lee, Jason Beghe, Laura Prepon and Lisa Marie Presley. Their experiences differ: some described a public break, while others were reported to have left or simply said they no longer practiced.
That distinction matters. Being raised around Scientology, taking an introductory course, belonging to the organization and formally leaving it are not interchangeable claims. This list includes only people for whom the sources below report a departure or a clear end to practicing; it does not treat brief coursework or disputed affiliation as proof that someone left.
Which celebrities have publicly left Scientology?
Leah Remini
ABC News reported that Remini publicly left Scientology in 2013. Her initial announcement did not give a reason. In a 2016 interview, she later described her doubts and experiences in the organization; the Church disputed her allegations and criticized her. Those statements should be understood as Remini’s account and the Church’s response, not as court findings or independently established facts. ABC News’ interview with Remini provides more context.
Paul Haggis
ABC News reported that the filmmaker left in 2009. The Independent reported that Haggis had been a member for 35 years and that his break followed a Church branch’s support for California’s Proposition 8. That support was reported as a key reason for his decision; it should not be treated as the only possible explanation for a long and personal departure. The Independent’s report on Haggis also recounts his claim that some actors had left privately, but does not substantiate unnamed departures.

Jason Lee
CBS News reported that actor Jason Lee revealed he had left Scientology. The report cited here does not establish a specific exit date or explain his reason, so neither should be inferred. CBS News’ roundup of celebrities reported to have left includes Lee.
Jason Beghe
Actor Jason Beghe has been reported as a former Scientologist and has publicly criticized the organization. Esquire discusses him among public departures, while Just Jared quotes his criticism. The available reporting supports describing him as a former member and critic, but does not settle a precise year when he left. Esquire’s discussion of departures and Just Jared’s roundup provide coverage.

Laura Prepon
Prepon’s reported wording was that she was “no longer practicing Scientology.” In a 2021 interview, she said she had not practiced for close to five years. This is evidence that she had stopped practicing before the interview, not necessarily that she staged a formal or public resignation. Yahoo’s report on Prepon’s interview preserves that distinction.
Lisa Marie Presley
CBS News reported that Presley left Scientology in 2012. The report cited here does not provide a detailed first-person account or establish a reason, so it is best to leave the circumstances unspecified. CBS News’ roundup reports the departure.

Why the number 20 is not a confirmed count
Celebrity lists often group together people with very different connections to Scientology. A person may have been a committed member, grown up in a Scientologist family, tried a course, been described as affiliated in one interview, or simply have relatives who belonged. Only some of those circumstances establish that the person joined and later left.
- A reported departure: A person or a specific, credible report says they left.
- Stopped practicing: Someone says they no longer practice, which does not necessarily establish a formal resignation.
- Coursework or association: Taking a course or having family ties alone does not establish membership or a later departure.
- Disputed affiliation: Conflicting descriptions should not be resolved by labeling someone a confirmed former member without stronger evidence.
For example, Jerry Seinfeld was reported to have taken a course in the 1970s but not pursued it further; that does not establish that he was a formal member who later left. Beck’s accounts of affiliation have been described as contradictory, so he should not be counted as a confirmed defector on that basis. Claims about Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes and Mimi Rogers also require stronger, person-specific evidence before assigning a membership status, departure date or motive.

What can—and cannot—be said about why they left
There is no single explanation that applies to everyone on this list. The reporting connects Haggis’s break with his objection to a Church branch’s support for Proposition 8. Remini later gave her own account of her doubts and experiences, which the Church disputed. For Lee, Beghe and Presley, the cited reports do not establish enough detail to attribute a specific motive. Prepon’s reported statement concerns her practice, not a public explanation for a formal departure.
Former members’ statements can document what they say they experienced and why they made a decision. They should be presented as attributed accounts rather than treated as proof of disputed allegations. Likewise, Haggis’s assertion that other actors left privately is not a reliable basis for guessing who they were or adding them to a confirmed list.

Documentaries and first-person accounts
For Remini’s perspective, her memoir Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology and the documentary series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath are relevant starting points. Lawrence Wright’s book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief and the Going Clear documentary offer broader reported context. Availability of the series and film varies by service and region, so check current listings rather than assuming a particular streaming platform carries them. ABC News’ interview with Remini also discusses her account.
