Some celebrities have been spotted taking an ordinary train ride; others were performing, filming, or documenting a very public trip. The distinction matters: a subway photo can capture a chance encounter without proving that the whole appearance was unplanned.
Here are the sourced examples, with context attached. The available text for Complex’s gallery names Lana Del Rey, Aziz Ansari, and Hugh Jackman, but does not verify the full 20-person lineup or provide individual details for those images. Treat the gallery as a starting point, not confirmation of every subject or story.
New York subway rides and encounters
Jay-Z and Ellen Grossman: a conversation on the R train
Artist Ellen Grossman met Jay-Z on a crowded New York R train as he traveled from Manhattan to Brooklyn for a concert. Their conversation was spontaneous, but the ride later appeared in a documentary about his Barclays Center performances. It is best described as a chance encounter captured during a concert-related trip, not simply an anonymous commute. The New York Times reported on the encounter. [c004]
Kal Penn: a selfie that included a fellow passenger
In March 2016, a commuter tried to take a selfie that included actor Kal Penn. Penn noticed and posted about the moment. It is a small, mutual-photo encounter rather than evidence of a larger subway story. NBC News covered Penn’s post. [c003]

MLB reported that former Yankees teammates CC Sabathia and Dellin Betances took the subway to the Yankees’ home opener on April 4, 2026. The trip was Sabathia’s first subway ride. MLB’s report gives the event date and context. [c006]
Brandy: an impromptu performance
Brandy sang “Home” from The Wiz on a New York subway in July 2015. TIME described commuters as apparently not recognizing her, and the performance was documented on video. This was a musical moment in public, not just a passenger caught between stops. TIME reported on the video. [c007]

London Underground sightings and recordings
ITV News’s retrospective on 150 years of the Tube includes reports and footage involving Rihanna, Kim Wilde, Tony Blair, and David Cameron. The examples span 1999 to 2012 and show how different a celebrity “Tube sighting” can be: a fan spotting, a singalong, a photographer-led appearance, or a conversation with another passenger. ITV published the retrospective on January 11, 2013. [c002]

Tony Blair: photographers on the train
ITV says photographers filmed Tony Blair on the Tube in 1999, and he apologized to a passenger for the disruption. That detail changes the character of the image: this was not simply a private ride unnoticed by everyone around him. [c002]
David Cameron: an eastbound Jubilee line journey
In October 2011, David Cameron boarded an eastbound Jubilee line train at Westminster and spoke with passenger Sanyogita Mayer, according to ITV. The reported line, station, date, and encounter are useful context for any image from the trip. [c002]

What these subway photos can—and cannot—show
A picture of a familiar face in a train car does not by itself tell you whether the person was commuting, meeting fans, performing, or filming. In these sourced examples, the moment may be documented by a commuter, a celebrity’s social post, recorded video, an interview, or a planned production. Those are different kinds of evidence and should be captioned differently.
- Reported ride or sighting: Attribute the account and retain its date or event context when the source provides one.
- Recorded performance: Name the song or performance and say that it was recorded.
- Planned production or promotion: Identify the segment or filming context instead of calling it an unplanned commute.
- Gallery lead without details: Credit the gallery, but do not invent a route, date, or anecdote absent from the accessible account.
The examples span the New York subway and London Underground, and they do not establish a measure of how often celebrities use public transit. They are reported moments, not a representative sample.
