The routine is set to “Apple,” a track from Charli XCX’s Brat, and celebrities including Charli, the cast of Twisters, Brooke Shields, Joe Jonas and Stephen Colbert were among the public figures documented doing it in July 2024. These are dated examples, not a complete list of everyone who has ever performed the dance.
Who created the “Apple” dance?
New York-based actor and content creator Kelley Heyer choreographed the routine. The Guardian reported on July 28, 2024, that she came up with it “on a whim.” Heyer said she wanted to draw attention to a song on Brat that she felt was underappreciated. As she put it, “The rhythm in Apple made me want to dance in a certain way.” The Guardian’s report on the dance’s origin includes her account.
Charli XCX later joined in, but the choreography was Heyer’s. Heyer described her process as getting up, standing in front of a mirror and taking inspiration from the song’s lyrics.
What does the dance look like?
The recognizable gestures include body rolls, hands on hips, holding an imaginary apple above the head and miming a driving motion. The moves are simple enough to read quickly in a short video, while still giving performers room to add their own expressions and flourishes.

Which celebrities and public figures did the “Apple” dance?
Published coverage in July 2024 recorded a range of performers. The Guardian named Charli XCX, the cast of Twisters, Brooke Shields, Joe Jonas and Stephen Colbert. Those examples are documented in its July 28 report.
A July 23 feature from Them focused on queer and trans performers and other public figures. It covered Nikki Hiltz, Jonathan Van Ness, Remi Wolf, MUNA, Gabby Windey, The Aces, Julia Fox, and Charli XCX dancing with Troye Sivan and Terrence O’Connor. Them’s feature presents its selections as a deliberately unserious ranking, not an objective measure of who danced best.

Together, these reports offer a snapshot of the trend’s early celebrity and public-figure participants—not an exhaustive roster. They establish that each named person or group was featured doing the routine, but they do not establish that these were the only public figures to take part.
How did the dance spread?
In a September 2024 interview with Autostraddle, Heyer recalled that about 200 videos used the sound when she first posted. She said the number was around 2,000 after Charli XCX, Troye Sivan and Terrence O’Connor posted their version, and about 400,000 by the time of the interview. These are Heyer’s recollections at particular points in time, not audited platform statistics or a measure of the dance’s total reach. Autostraddle’s interview gives her account.

What happened with Roblox?
In April 2025, TechCrunch reported that Heyer had sued Roblox over the alleged unlicensed use of her choreography. According to the report, Fortnite had obtained permission to license the choreography, while Heyer alleged Roblox had not signed an agreement. TechCrunch also reported Heyer’s estimate that Roblox earned more than $123,000 from over 60,000 emotes; that figure was an estimate connected to the lawsuit, not an independently verified total. The report describes allegations, not a court finding that Roblox infringed Heyer’s rights. TechCrunch’s April 18, 2025 report covers the lawsuit and the parties’ positions.
