For a conventional live stream sent to a platform such as YouTube Live, choose CBR when the platform recommends it. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR). Variable bitrate (VBR) can use bits more efficiently, but its benefits depend on the encoder and delivery pipeline; it is not a universal upgrade for ordinary live ingest.
What CBR and VBR mean
CBR: a steady target
Constant bitrate aims to keep the encoded stream near a consistent target rate over time. That makes the outgoing rate more predictable for a conventional live ingest connection. CBR does not mean every moment has identical visual complexity or quality; it describes the encoder’s rate-control goal.
VBR: a changing rate
Variable bitrate lets the encoder vary its output rate according to its configured mode and limits. It can spend more bits on complex scenes and fewer on simpler ones, potentially preserving quality more efficiently. How much it varies depends on the encoder settings, and the receiving pipeline must tolerate and make useful use of those changes.
Which mode should you choose?
For YouTube Live
Use CBR for a conventional YouTube Live encoder setup because YouTube’s published live encoder settings specify CBR. Follow YouTube’s current guidance for the rest of the output configuration too; the suitable bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube Help: live encoder settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For other destinations
Use the destination’s current ingest specification rather than assuming the same setting applies everywhere. The available evidence here does not establish Twitch’s current ingest requirements, so check its present official guidance before selecting a mode or bitrate for Twitch. Twitch’s 2013 article advocating CBR describes the delivery design of that time and is historical context, not sufficient evidence of a current universal rule: Twitch, “Better Broadcasting with CBR” (2013).
For segment-based adaptive-bitrate delivery
VBR may be useful in an ABR-aware, segment-based workflow: Twitch engineering described how VBR can provide more stable quality and save bits when the encoder understands that delivery context. That is a specific pipeline, not a blanket recommendation for a basic single-bitrate live stream. Twitch engineering: segment-based rate control for live ABR streaming (2017).

What else to configure for YouTube Live
Rate control is only one part of a reliable stream. YouTube’s published guidance covers protocol, codec, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and bitrate recommendations by output configuration. Check the live encoder settings page for the combination you intend to send rather than copying a bitrate recommendation for a different resolution, codec, or frame rate.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS options.
- Codec: Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options.
- Frame rate: The guidance covers output up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Match YouTube’s recommendation to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. That platform-side transcoding is part of the delivery path, but it does not change the published encoder recommendation to use CBR for live ingest. OBS also explains how transcoding creates alternate feeds, often with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates, and notes platform differences: OBS: transcoding.

How to decide when your encoder offers both
- Check the destination’s current ingest rules. If they specify CBR, use CBR rather than substituting a general argument for VBR.
- Identify the delivery path. A single-bitrate live ingest is not the same as a segment-based ABR pipeline designed to respond to variable rates.
- Check how VBR is configured. Determine whether it has a target, a maximum bitrate, or a target-quality control, and whether the receiving system supports the resulting variation.
- Consider your available upload capacity. A changing encoded rate still has to fit the connection and the platform’s limits; the right setting depends on the actual destination and configuration.
- Keep platform processing in view. If the platform transcodes the incoming stream, do not assume that an ABR-specific encoder benefit applies to the ingest stage.
In OBS 31.0’s NVENC options, “Variable Bitrate with Target Quality” behaves similarly to CQP while allowing a maximum bitrate. OBS says maxBitRate is used for VBR and ignored in CBR mode. This is an encoder-specific control, not a reason to disregard the destination’s ingest specification. OBS: Advanced NVENC Options (31.0).
Common mistakes and fixes
- Choosing VBR because it sounds more efficient: Efficiency depends on the pipeline. For ordinary YouTube Live ingest, follow the published CBR recommendation.
- Copying a bitrate without matching the output: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Select the row that matches your configuration.
- Treating an old platform article as a current rule: Twitch’s CBR article dates to 2013. Verify current ingest requirements directly before applying it to a present-day setup.
- Confusing live ingest with ABR delivery: Twitch’s VBR discussion concerns an ABR-aware segment-based workflow. It does not establish that VBR is preferable for a basic live encoder-to-platform connection.
- Assuming VBR always causes buffering or CBR always improves picture quality: Neither conclusion follows universally. Results depend on encoder behavior, transport, buffering, and the platform pipeline.
