Caught Stealing makes a persuasive case for Austin Butler as a movie star—not through a flashy transformation or invincible action-hero routine, but by making a bruised, ordinary man compelling company. Darren Aronofsky’s 1998 New York crime caper is scruffy and sometimes overstuffed, yet Butler gives its escalating chaos a steady human center.
What is Caught Stealing about?
Hank Thompson (Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom, but his playing days are over. In 1998, he tends bar at a New York dive and follows his team’s pennant chase. When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to look after a cat, Hank gets pulled into a criminal mess involving people who want something from Russ’s apartment—and do not tell Hank what it is. Sony’s synopsis establishes the setup; the less Hank understands, the more the favor threatens to consume his life.

The film adapts Charlie Huston’s 2004 novel, with Huston writing the screenplay. Its Lower East Side is a lived-in period setting, not simply a backdrop: the reviews point to details such as Kim’s Video, Shea Stadium, Alphabet City bars and the anxiety of running low on mobile-phone minutes. The Associated Press calls it a period movie as much as a caper, and its affection for a vanished New York is a major part of the appeal. Sony Pictures’ film page; Associated Press review.
Does Austin Butler carry the movie?
Yes: the case for Butler is that he makes Hank watchable without making him exceptional at everything. Hank is vulnerable, outmatched and sometimes physically worn down. He is not a sleek criminal mastermind or a superhero who can control the violence around him. Butler’s relaxed, approachable presence lets the character remain the audience’s point of entry as the story gathers an increasingly eccentric cast and more disorder.

- Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a former baseball prodigy now tending bar at a New York dive, has a great girl (Zo Kravitz) and his team is chasing the pennant. When his neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to watch a cat, he?s caught in the middle of a crew of threatening gangsters and he has no idea why. He?s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out.
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman frames the question as whether an actor can carry a movie, and argues that Butler does so with “an easy, laid-back charm.” He also finds Hank more relatable than Butler’s earlier roles and notes how Huston tailored the character to the actor’s “ambivalent-golden-boy energy.” Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus similarly identifies Butler’s movie-star charisma as a strength, though that aggregate wording should not be mistaken for unanimous opinion. Variety review; Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus.
That praise has a meaningful counterpoint. The Washington Post’s Ty Burr calls Butler “sympathetic and a little colorless,” while still describing him as an effective center for the surrounding performers. That is a fair description of the trade-off: Butler’s performance is not built around showy acting fireworks, and viewers seeking a more forceful or transformative lead may find him understated. But the restraint suits a character whose chief problem is being trapped in events he cannot master. The Washington Post review.
Is this a typical Darren Aronofsky film?
It is a tonal gearshift from the bleak intensity many viewers associate with Aronofsky. The critics consensus describes Caught Stealing as a freewheeling throwback and notes its unexpectedly lighthearted mode. There is more caper momentum and ensemble bustle here than a punishing descent into one person’s obsession.
That lighter touch does not make the film gentle. Its criminal world is violent, and the tone can swing between comic energy, grim danger and period nostalgia. The result will feel like a refreshing change for viewers who want Aronofsky to loosen up; others may find the film’s crowded, everything-at-once approach less satisfying than his more tightly focused work. The Washington Post’s 2.5-star review calls the style enjoyable but crowded, while the Associated Press gives it three out of four stars and finds it “a little shaggy,” with room for more humor. Those are individual critics’ ratings and judgments, not a single consensus score. The Washington Post; Associated Press.

Caught Stealing is a good fit for viewers drawn to Butler’s low-key screen presence, ensemble crime stories and richly specific period atmosphere. Its 1998 details give the chase a texture that a generic contemporary setting would not: phones, neighborhoods and city landmarks all belong to a recognizably different New York. The Associated Press particularly values the film’s nostalgia and affection for the city.
It is a less certain recommendation if you want a tightly controlled thriller, constant comedy or a single clear tonal register. The Washington Post’s patience-dependent verdict captures the risk: the film’s pleasures are there, but its sprawling rogues’ gallery and kitchen-sink style can make the ride feel crowded. It works best if you are willing to follow Hank through the mess rather than expect every detour to sharpen the central plot.
How violent is Caught Stealing?
The Associated Press reports an R rating for strong violent content, pervasive language, some sexuality and nudity, and brief drug use. The violence is part of the caper’s criminal danger rather than a sign that the film is a clean-cut action adventure. The AP lists the running time as 107 minutes. Associated Press review.
