Catherine, Princess of Wales—also widely known as Kate Middleton—attended the Wimbledon men’s singles final on 14 July 2024, joining her daughter Princess Charlotte at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in London. She received a standing ovation and presented the trophy to Carlos Alcaraz after he defeated Novak Djokovic. Kensington Palace confirmed her attendance the day before, while making clear it was not a return to a full schedule of public engagements.
Why the Wimbledon appearance was notable
The final was Catherine’s second public appearance of 2024 at that point, following Trooping the Colour in June. She was undergoing cancer treatment. Her appearance at the match was a specific public engagement, not an announcement that treatment had ended or that she had resumed her usual schedule.
On 13 July, Kensington Palace’s confirmation, reported by ITV News, said she would attend the men’s final and present the trophy. She had not attended the women’s final on 13 July; Wimbledon Chair Debbie Jevans presented that trophy on her behalf.
What happened at the final
Catherine arrived with Princess Charlotte on 14 July. As they entered Centre Court, spectators gave her a standing ovation. After Alcaraz beat Djokovic, she presented the winner’s trophy. The event-day account from CBS News, reporting for the Associated Press, described both the crowd’s response and the ceremony.

Her role as club patron
The trophy presentation reflected Catherine’s role as patron of the All England Club, a position she had held since 2016, according to the CBS/AP account. Her ceremonial duties explain why she presented the trophy; they do not provide evidence about her health or recovery.
What Catherine had said about treatment
In a June statement quoted by ITV on 13 July, Catherine said she was making good progress but that treatment remained ongoing. She described the experience this way: “As anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days.” She also said, “I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty.” Those comments framed the appearance at the time: it was a return to one event while she continued treatment, not confirmation that treatment was over.

How the appearance fits the later timeline
The Wimbledon final was Catherine’s last public appearance before she announced in September 2024 that she had completed chemotherapy. The Associated Press reported on 22 September that she then made her first public appearance since that announcement, identifying Wimbledon as her preceding public appearance. That later milestone does not change what the July event established: she attended the final while treatment was ongoing.
