The joint statement issued on March 23, 2024, was a brief thank-you for public support—not a new medical update. A Kensington Palace spokesperson said Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William were touched by messages following Catherine’s cancer announcement the previous day and grateful that people understood their request for privacy.
What did the joint statement say?
A Kensington Palace spokesperson said the couple were “enormously touched” by messages of support from the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world. The spokesperson added that they were grateful for the public’s understanding of their request for privacy. ABC News Australia reproduced the statement.
The remarks were attributed to an unnamed palace spokesperson speaking on the couple’s behalf. They were not a separate personal speech by William or a direct quotation from Catherine.
Why did they issue it?
The statement acknowledged the messages that arrived after Catherine’s video announcement on March 22, 2024. In that video, she said post-operative tests had found cancer and that she was undergoing preventive chemotherapy. She described the news as a shock and asked for privacy for her young family. The Associated Press reported on her announcement.
