That is a specific record—not a claim that she is the oldest gamer or the oldest streamer overall. Known online as grumpygran1948, Bowie discovered Fortnite through her grandson and turned her interest in the game into a streaming community.
What record did Cath Bowie set?
Guinness World Records named Bowie the oldest female Fortnite streamer on Twitch. The recognition applies to a particular combination of gender, game and platform; it should not be broadened to “oldest gamer” or to streamers on every platform. Bowie was 78 when Guinness published its profile on 24 September 2026. STV News also reported the record and described her as an Aberdeen grandmother.
Guinness reported that Bowie had more than 24,000 Twitch followers in that September 2026 profile. Followers are a changing count, so the figure is a dated snapshot rather than a live total.
How did she start playing and streaming Fortnite?
Bowie first became curious about Fortnite after seeing her grandson play in 2017. She tried the game on his console, then created her own Fortnite account in 2018 and went on to stream. STV News reports that she later bought her own console; the reports do not identify its model or describe a particular streaming setup.

Why does she keep playing?
Bowie says Fortnite offers a particular excitement she has not found in other games. “Although I have tried several other games I have never found the excitement that I get from Fortnite. I call myself a ‘Fortniter’ more than a gamer,” she told Guinness World Records.

How did her grandson react?
Bowie told Guinness that her grandson initially doubted anyone would watch her stream. “As a young guy he just couldn’t believe that his grandma would do such a thing and suggested that nobody would join me or watch me,” she recalled. Bowie said the skepticism spurred her on: “Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it. 24,000+ followers later and he doesn’t mention it. I wonder why?”
Does her story mean you can start gaming or streaming later in life?
Bowie’s example shows that age did not keep her from taking up Fortnite, learning to stream and finding an audience. It does not prove that every older player will have the same experience or audience, but her own advice is direct: “NEVER let age stop you. If I can do it so can you.”

Her experience also sits within a wider, varied scene of older women who stream games. A 2026 exploratory article in the International Journal of Ageing and Later Life examines older women’s streaming through a case study of Uruguayan streamer Aqumadre and mentions streamers from several countries and services. It is not a census, does not study Bowie and cannot show how common her experience is.
