Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a YouTube stream routed through Castr, set the YouTube-bound output to match YouTube’s current specifications for the codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, use 17 Mbps at 1080p60, 14 Mbps at 1080p30, and 8 Mbps at either 720p30 or 720p60. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where supported. Keep the settings for the encoder-to-Castr feed separate from those for Castr’s output to YouTube.
Choose the YouTube-bound bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec
The values below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source, encoder, and sustained upload connection can support reliably. YouTube’s current specifications also list separate minimum and recommended rates for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; consult its live encoder settings for those codec-specific values rather than applying the H.264 figures to them.
| YouTube output | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
These are recommendations for the stream YouTube receives. They do not mean a 1080p60 source will look better merely because it is sent at that setting: source detail, movement, encoder stability, and available bandwidth all matter. For a documentary with mostly static shots, 30 fps may be sufficient; footage with frequent motion may benefit from 60 fps if the source and connection can sustain it.
Set the encoder parameters YouTube expects
For YouTube-bound video, YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, at up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed 4 seconds. RTMPS is recommended because it encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS when supported by the encoder and workflow.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed. YouTube’s listed stereo AAC setting is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- Frame rate: no higher than 60 fps.
For a 60 fps stream, a 2-second keyframe interval corresponds to a keyframe every 120 frames; at 30 fps, it is every 60 frames. If your encoder offers a keyframe interval in seconds, enter 2 rather than calculating frames manually.
Keep the Castr ingest feed separate from YouTube output
A Castr workflow has two distinct legs: your encoder sends a feed to Castr, then Castr delivers a stream to YouTube. The feed sent to Castr is not automatically governed by every destination-specific YouTube setting. Castr’s LiveAPI encoder settings guide gives general ingest recommendations, including H.264, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, preferred audio at 128 Kbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and resolution-specific ranges. Castr directs users to the destination’s guidance for platform-specific settings.

Configure the encoder-to-Castr leg according to Castr’s applicable ingest guidance and the output-to-YouTube leg according to YouTube’s current specifications. Do not combine different ranges from the two legs into one bitrate target. Castr’s YouTube bitrate article gives 12 Mbps for H.264 1080p60, while YouTube’s current table recommends 17 Mbps for that YouTube ingest setting. The available guidance does not explain the difference, so use YouTube’s current specification for the YouTube-bound target.
Budget upload capacity for a continuous stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Measure sustained upload capacity, not download speed, and account for both the primary and backup feeds as well as that headroom. Network capacity shared with other devices, or that varies at the time the channel runs, can make a nominally adequate connection unreliable.

As a planning calculation, take the bitrate of each feed that uses the same outbound connection, add those bitrates, then allow the recommended 20% headroom. For example, a single 17 Mbps H.264 1080p60 feed would call for at least 20.4 Mbps of sustained upload capacity after adding 20% headroom. A backup encoder sending simultaneously over that same connection increases the required capacity; if it is not transmitting until failover, it does not add simultaneous traffic before the switch. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise leaving room for the stream’s primary and backup bandwidth.
Plan monitoring, recovery, and recording for 24/7 operation
Test and watch stream health
A bitrate setting cannot correct a failed source, unstable encoder, network interruption, or destination issue. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Its operational guidance advises arranging an encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before an event, checking that local archive files are growing, and testing backup encoder failover. Those timings are event-preparation advice, not special requirements for a continuous stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips and best practices.

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream over 12 hours
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 24/7 broadcast therefore needs a separate recording plan if preserving the footage matters. Use a local or otherwise independent recording, and verify that it is actually being written rather than assuming the live stream will become an archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Choose a recovery path and test it
Castr documents two backup approaches: an encoder-level option in which a second encoder can take over, and a file-level option in which backup VOD can play if the live input drops. Its help material also describes adaptive bitrate and customizable rendition controls. Availability may depend on plan or account state; the cited guidance does not establish eligibility for every account. Review Castr’s backup feature guidance for the workflow available to you, then test the recovery path before relying on it.

Common problems and fixes
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: check measured upload capacity, competing network use, and whether the encoder is holding the selected bitrate. Lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a stable supported setting, then test again.
- The stream does not meet the expected YouTube output settings: check the YouTube-bound output separately from the encoder-to-Castr ingest. Confirm codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, and the 2-second keyframe interval.
- Picture or audio interruptions occur after a source or connection failure: check the relevant Castr backup mode and test the configured fallback. Do not assume a backup is active just because it has been configured.
- The live broadcast has no complete archive: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Record independently and confirm the recording is growing.
