Asked how her abrupt exit had been handled, Katic told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published January 27, 2018: “I’m actually still not clear on the thought process behind the way that it went down. It hurt and it was a harsh ending.” The remark describes her understanding at the time of the interview; it does not establish why the decision was made.

Katic also emphasized gratitude rather than reducing her experience to the circumstances of her departure. She credited the people she worked with, called the eight-season series a formative experience, and said she was glad to have been part of a love story that moved viewers. “I hope it remains something special in viewers’ minds forever,” she said. Why Absentia appealed to her
Katic said she was drawn to the idea of an “anti-hero survivor.” She did not want to play a mother or girlfriend whose role was mainly to wait and worry in the background. Emily Byrne, she said, could occupy those roles while remaining an active participant in the story: “I liked the idea of telling a story about an anti-hero survivor.”

Who is Emily Byrne?
In the interview’s description, Emily is an FBI agent presumed dead after being kidnapped. She returns six years later and is framed for murder. Sony describes Absentia as a drama and suspense series, with Katic playing Emily Byrne. See Sony Pictures Television’s series page.
When the interview and series launched
Entertainment Weekly published the interview on January 27, 2018, when Katic was promoting the series. Contemporary coverage said Absentia would debut on Amazon on February 2, 2018; that is the launch-era date, not a guide to where the show streams today.
