Bugonia turns a kidnapping into a pressure cooker: two conspiracy-obsessed men believe they have seized an alien CEO who means to destroy Earth, while the film keeps the boundary between delusion and danger deliberately uncomfortable. Yorgos Lanthimos’s dark science-fiction thriller is most compelling as a struggle over who gets to define reality—and who has the power to make that definition stick.
What is Bugonia about?
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Will Tracy, Bugonia follows Teddy Gatz (Jesse Plemons) and Don Gatz (Aidan Delbis), two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), the CEO of a major company. They are convinced she is an alien intent on destroying Earth. The film premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival; Focus Features lists October 24, 2025, as its release date.

The premise invites a straightforward question—are the kidnappers right?—but the movie’s sharper interest lies in what conviction does to people. Teddy interprets every detail as evidence for a theory he already holds. Michelle, held captive and subjected to his demands, has to navigate a situation in which rational explanation may not be enough to regain control. That contest makes the story more than a puzzle about extraterrestrials: it is about certainty, power, and the stories people use to explain a frightening world.
Does the conspiracy satire sustain its tension?
The film’s central tension comes from keeping the alien claim in play without treating the kidnappers’ belief as established fact. Their conviction is part of the fiction, not proof of an actual conspiracy or scientific claim. The audience is left to weigh their interpretation against Michelle’s predicament, while the danger of the abduction remains real regardless of what anyone believes about her origins.

That ambiguity gives the dark humor a hard edge. The absurdity of the men’s premise can provoke a laugh, but the joke is inseparable from the violence and control involved in forcing someone to submit to it. The humor works best when it exposes the gap between Teddy’s grand explanation and the immediate, ugly consequences of his actions. The film’s bleakness is not a soft landing after the comedy; it is what makes the comedy uneasy.
Lanthimos has described the film’s connection to contemporary anxieties in explicitly real-world terms. Speaking at Venice, he said, “Not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional,” and added, “A lot of it is very reflective of the real world,” according to the Associated Press. The film’s satire draws force from that stated intention without needing to validate Teddy’s beliefs.

How do Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons shape the power struggle?
Stone’s Michelle and Plemons’s Teddy form the film’s central collision. The premise puts Michelle in a position of physical captivity, but the conflict is not simply captor versus victim: Teddy wants to control what her identity means, while Michelle has to respond to his certainty without granting it authority. The story’s suspense depends on that imbalance and on the possibility that neither person can easily steer the encounter toward a safe resolution.
Delbis plays Don, Teddy’s partner in the kidnapping. His presence gives the conspiracy more than one believer, while the film’s cast also includes Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. The cast and principal credits are listed by the Venice Biennale.

Why does the basement setting matter?
A substantial part of the film takes place in a basement, concentrating the drama in a cramped, enclosed space. That confinement suits a story in which the characters have limited room to escape either the physical situation or the narratives trapping them. Cinematographer Robbie Ryan and Lanthimos shot the film on VistaVision, a high-resolution film format. In a Focus Features interview, Ryan said the format helped the filmmakers make the basement feel intimate and capture faces, depth, and detail. The cinematography credit belongs to Ryan; Yorgos Mavropsaridis edited the film, and Jerskin Fendrix composed the music.

Bugonia adapts the 2003 South Korean science-fiction black comedy Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-hwan. It is not based on a book. The Associated Press and Netflix Tudum identify the earlier film as its source.

That connection offers a useful route into the film for viewers interested in comparing adaptations, but Bugonia can be approached on its own terms: its central question is not whether a viewer knows the original, but whether the mix of conspiracy, comedy, and menace holds together.
How long is it, and what should viewers know about the content?
Universal Pictures At Home lists a 1 hour 59 minute runtime and an R rating for bloody violent content including a suicide, grisly images, and language. The Venice Biennale archive lists 120 minutes, so the published runtime varies by one minute between those listings. Universal’s page lists 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Collector’s Edition, Blu-ray + Digital Collector’s Edition, and DVD Collector’s Edition formats.

It is a better fit for people drawn to Lanthimos’s formally controlled filmmaking, uncomfortable dark humor, or the clash between corporate power and ecological anxiety than for anyone looking for a reassuring science-fiction adventure.
