Carry-On is a tightly contained airport thriller built around a simple pressure point: one TSA agent is forced to let a dangerous suitcase through security or risk the life of his pregnant girlfriend. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the Netflix film turns a busy Christmas Eve shift at Los Angeles International Airport into a race against an unseen network of surveillance, coercion and political violence.

What is Carry-On about?

The film follows Ethan Kopek, played by Taron Egerton, a young TSA agent working at LAX. Ethan is frustrated with his job and hopes to enter the police academy, but his immediate priorities are more personal: his girlfriend Nora is pregnant, and the couple are preparing for the birth of their child.

During a routine security shift, Ethan finds an earpiece left by a passenger. A mysterious man, credited as the Traveler and played by Jason Bateman, uses it to contact him. The demand is precise: Ethan must allow a particular suitcase onto an aircraft. If he refuses, the Traveler threatens Nora.

That setup gives the film its central tension. Ethan is not trying to stop a criminal from outside the airport; he is being compelled to become the security failure. Every ordinary procedure becomes a potential trap, and every attempt to seek help risks exposing Nora to the Traveler and his surveillance partner, Watcher.

Where was the film made?

Although the story takes place at Los Angeles International Airport, the production did not film at LAX. The crew used the retired Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport terminal in New Orleans and redesigned it to resemble the Los Angeles airport.

The production did make an effort to ground the airport setting in recognizable procedures. TSA advisers and airport-security specialists consulted on the project, while the cast received training related to TSA work, terminology and the relationships between airport agencies. That research helps the terminal feel like a functioning workplace rather than a generic action-movie location.

What is in the suitcase?

Ethan eventually allows the case through security. He learns that it contains a device carrying Novichok, a class of nerve agents developed by the Soviet Union during the 1970s and 1980s.

The weapon is part of a larger false-flag operation organized by military contractors. Their target is a member of Congress who is traveling toward Washington, D.C. The Traveler’s apparent destination is deliberately misleading, forcing Ethan to work out where the attack is really intended to happen.

The Novichok detail gives the thriller a particularly severe threat, but the film does not present a technically reliable model of airport screening. Netflix’s own behind-the-scenes material acknowledges that advisers considered the central scenario unrealistic: a weapon of this type would be expected to trigger security concerns rather than pass through the checkpoint in the straightforward way shown on screen.

Carry-On ending explained

Spoilers below.

Ethan discovers that the suitcase is connected to an attack bound for Washington, D.C., rather than the destination suggested by the Traveler. He boards the aircraft and tries to stop the plan from inside.

His solution depends on manipulating the luggage system. Ethan replaces the weapon’s case with a slightly larger one, causing the device to be sent to the aircraft’s luggage hold. He then removes the Novichok vial and traps the Traveler inside an airtight refrigerator. After Ethan breaks the vial, the Traveler dies from exposure.

At the same time, Watcher moves against Nora. He is killed by Jesse, Mateo’s husband, before he can murder her. The separate hostage situations therefore converge: Ethan defeats the man controlling him, while Jesse prevents the threat against Nora from being carried out.

The final sequence takes place one year later. Ethan and Nora have a baby, and Ethan is now wearing an LAPD badge. In a brief but deliberate echo of the earlier story, he steps in when an impatient passenger mistreats a TSA employee. Ethan’s transformation is no longer about escaping an overlooked airport job; it is about choosing to intervene when someone is being threatened or dismissed.

Is Carry-On based on a true story?

No. Carry-On is a fictional thriller written by T.J. Fixman, with additional writing by Michael Green. Its airport environment draws on real procedures and professional consultation, but Ethan, the Traveler, the Novichok plot and the false-flag conspiracy are fictional.

The Bottom Line

Carry-On works best as a pressure-cooker thriller rather than a realistic account of airport security. Its strongest idea is the way it turns Ethan’s routine authority into a weapon against him: he knows the system, but the Traveler knows exactly how to make him afraid to use it. The film was released on Netflix on December 13, 2024, and runs for approximately 1 hour and 59 minutes.
