Is Carry-On a Christmas movie?
Yes, with a useful distinction: it is a Christmas-set action thriller, not a story whose genre is primarily holiday romance or family comedy. The holiday context matters because the plot unfolds around Christmas Eve air travel, and the airport’s decorations and seasonal music contribute to the film’s holiday identity.

Collet-Serra described that balance in an interview with Netflix Tudum: “My hope is that Carry-On can be enjoyed all year round as a fun, popcorn thriller. But of course, the holiday travel theme is integral to our story, and we definitely had fun with it in terms of Christmas decorations in the airport and some classic holiday tunes in the soundtrack.” That is the director’s description of his intentions, not an independent critical verdict. It supports both sides of the classification: the movie is designed to work beyond the season, but Christmas is deliberately part of its setting and texture.
The distinction is useful for viewers choosing a seasonal movie. If a Christmas movie can be a thriller whose holiday setting shapes the experience, Carry-On qualifies. If the label means a film centered on traditional holiday themes, the case is less direct: the available official descriptions establish a high-stakes security plot and Christmas atmosphere, not a story built around holiday customs or family relationships.

How the airport setting serves the thriller
The airport is not just a backdrop: Ethan’s job places him at the security checkpoint where the package could be stopped or allowed through. That gives the story a defined pressure point and ties the suspense to the ordinary procedures of holiday travel. Collet-Serra has said contained settings can help viewers get to know characters quickly and personally, a rationale that fits a plot focused on one agent working under pressure. The film’s premise supplies a clear source of tension; whether the performances and pacing sustain it is a matter for the viewer rather than something established by the official synopsis.
Christmas decorations and classic holiday songs give that enclosed setting a seasonal contrast with the danger in the plot. In the director’s account, those details were part of how the film used the holiday, not merely incidental dressing.

When did Carry-On come out on Netflix?
Netflix Tudum gives the release date as December 13, 2024. Netflix’s original 2022 project announcement described a thriller about a TSA agent blackmailed over a dangerous package, and referred to a Christmas Day flight. For the released film’s story, the later Netflix catalog and Tudum descriptions specify Christmas Eve; those are the better guides to the finished film’s premise.
