Why did she sing a cappella?
Contemporaneous reporting by The Washington Post described an apparent audio or technical issue that delayed the expected start. Underwood waited, then began singing without accompaniment and told the audience, “If you know the words, help me out here.” The report said people in the Rotunda joined in and applauded at the end. The precise cause of the interruption is not established in the available reporting.
Where did the performance fall in the ceremony?
It followed Trump’s oath of office and inaugural address, and came before the benediction and national anthem, according to the JCCIC’s ceremony timeline. The official record of the address says Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. administered the oath and records Trump speaking at 12:10 p.m. in the Rotunda; see the Government Publishing Office transcript record.

What did Underwood say about accepting the invitation?
In a statement reported by the Associated Press before the event, Underwood said, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.” She added that she was “humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.” Those remarks describe her stated reason for taking part; the performance alone does not establish a broader political position.
For the event sequence and listed performers, the JCCIC program is the official record. The Washington Post account adds details about the disrupted start and audience response.
