German backpacker Carolina Wilga said she had lost 12 kilograms during an ordeal in Western Australia’s outback. The figure came from a hospital social-media post reported by ABC News; it was not presented as an independently verified medical measurement. Wilga was found alive on July 11, 2025, after spending 11 nights lost, following a vehicle crash that she said left her confused.
What happened to Carolina Wilga?
Wilga was last seen at a general store in Beacon, Western Australia, on June 29, 2025. Police found her abandoned van in Karroun Hill Nature Reserve on July 10. The following afternoon, local farmer Tania Henley found Wilga beside a road and raised the alarm. Henley told ABC News, “She was on the side of the road waving her hands.” ABC described Wilga as having spent 11 nights in freezing conditions before she was found.
Wilga was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth. She was discharged on July 16, 2025, after five nights in hospital. Police said she was exhausted, dehydrated and sunburnt, and had an injured foot. ABC reported that she was found barefoot, with her foot wrapped.
How did Wilga become lost?
In a statement posted on July 14, Wilga said she lost control of her van, rolled down a slope and hit her head significantly. She said she left the vehicle confused and got lost: “As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost.” This is Wilga’s account of the crash and what followed, rather than independently established forensic detail.

Wilga said she had food, water and clothing in the van. Police said she survived with minimal food and water, drinking rainwater and water from puddles, and sought shelter where possible, including in a cave. WA Police Acting Inspector Jessica Securo described Wilga’s departure from the vehicle as “pure panic,” as quoted by ABC News.
What does the 12-kilogram figure mean?
ABC News reported the figure from a photo Wilga posted from hospital, alongside the words: “When you need to gain 12 kilograms back.” Her post indicates that she believed she needed to regain 12 kilograms after the ordeal. The reports do not establish a clinically measured before-and-after weight, or a more precise period over which the loss occurred. It was not described as intentional weight loss.

Why was the ordeal described as 11 nights and 12 days?
Reports describe Wilga as missing for 12 days, while ABC News said she spent 11 nights lost before her rescue. Those descriptions refer to the same interval, counted in different ways: she was last seen on June 29 and found on July 11. Associated Press reported that the overnight temperature in the area fell to 2.6°C on the Thursday-to-Friday night before she was found.

Associated Press reported the vehicle as a 1995 Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon. The search focused on Karroun Hill Nature Reserve, where police located the abandoned van. Beacon, where Wilga was last seen, had a population of 123 in the 2021 Australian census, according to the Associated Press report. These details help place the search in context; they do not establish that any particular vehicle feature or equipment determined the outcome.
