Carla Hall’s new restaurant is bumblebirds, a Southern fried chicken restaurant and cocktail bar at 303 Pennsylvania Ave SE in Washington, D.C. Hall partnered with the Mendelsohn family’s Sunnyside Restaurant Group on the Capitol Hill venture, which announced March 16, 2026, as its official opening date. Its menu centers on chicken sandwiches, tenders and comfort-food sides, while its story draws on Hall’s Southern cooking and family memories, including her grandmother’s influence.
What is Carla Hall’s new restaurant?
The restaurant is styled bumblebirds on its official website. Hall opened it with the Mendelsohn family and their Washington-based Sunnyside Restaurant Group. The concept combines fast-casual Southern fried chicken with a cocktail bar, in a Capitol Hill location.
The announced official opening date was Monday, March 16, 2026. A celebration was advertised for March 14. The address is 303 Pennsylvania Ave SE, Washington, D.C. 20003. The restaurant’s website is the best place to check its current menu and visit details.
How her grandmother inspired the restaurant
Launch coverage describes Hall’s grandmother as the family’s culinary matriarch and connects the restaurant to Hall’s family food memories and Southern cooking. In a March 9, 2026, People exclusive, Hall said of her grandmother, “She was the culinary matriarch of my family, and I feel like I hold that torch now.” People’s opening story places that inheritance at the heart of the new venture.

Hall’s earlier Brooklyn restaurant, Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen, was a separate project. A 2014 Washington Post report associated it with Nashville hot chicken and recipes drawing on Hall’s cookbooks; that earlier menu and history should not be confused with bumblebirds. The Post’s report on the Brooklyn restaurant provides that earlier context.
What’s on the bumblebirds menu?
The official menu lists a mix of chicken dishes, sides, sweets and drinks. Offerings include fried or grilled chicken sandwiches on brioche, tenders, tacos and a fried chicken biscuit sandwich, alongside a fried oyster mushroom option. Sides and snacks include kettle chips, sweet potato fries, slaw, a biscuit with lavender honey, and pimento cheese with biscuit crackers. The menu also lists donuts, cocktails, iced tea and lemonade. Items and prices can change, so consult the current official menu rather than relying on early opening coverage.

Before the opening, Washingtonian reported Hall describing chicken dredged in a dry brine with powdered vinegar. Hall said the acid helped break down the chicken and make it tender, while the preparation avoided heavy breading. That explanation described the planned chicken preparation; it does not establish that every current menu item is made that way. Washingtonian’s pre-opening report includes Hall’s description.

Later coverage has described bumblebirds as a temporary pop-in or test run, but reports differ about the original planned duration: the Washington Post described a three-month plan, while Washingtonian reported six months. Those accounts do not establish whether the restaurant is still operating or when it will close. Because the official website and hours may change, confirm directly with the restaurant before making a trip.

The official site lists different hours in separate sections, so it does not provide a consistent schedule to rely on. The Post’s May review discusses the pop-in format and notes that the menu had been pared back since opening; Washingtonian’s May report likewise describes it as a test run.
