Cardi B was found not liable in a civil lawsuit brought by security guard Emani Ellis over a 2018 encounter outside a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office. The $24 million figure was the amount Ellis sought, as described in Cardi B’s trial testimony—not money the jury awarded. The trial drew attention for candid testimony, exchanges with Ellis’s lawyer, Cardi B’s changing wigs and a separate incident outside the courthouse.
What was the Cardi B lawsuit about?
Ellis sued Cardi B over an encounter outside a Beverly Hills obstetrician’s office in February 2018, when Cardi B was pregnant but had not publicly announced it. Ellis alleged that Cardi B physically attacked her, scratched her face and spat on her. Cardi B testified that the two argued but that she did not touch Ellis. Those are the parties’ accounts; the verdict determined liability in the civil suit, not every disputed detail of the encounter.

Why was $24 million mentioned?
During her testimony, Cardi B described Ellis as “suing me for $24 million,” according to the Associated Press’s September 2, 2025, report. That was the amount sought, not a damages award. The jury found Cardi B not liable and awarded Ellis no $24 million judgment. Associated Press and Reuters reported the verdict and amount.
What did the jury decide?
A 12-member jury unanimously found Cardi B not liable after about an hour of deliberation, according to AP and Reuters. This was a civil case, so the accurate description is that the jury found her not liable or ruled for her—not that she was “acquitted,” a term associated with criminal proceedings.

Which moments from the trial went viral?
The pregnancy and “disabled” exchange
Cardi B described being pregnant during the 2018 encounter. Asked whether she was “disabled” at the time, she replied, “At that moment, when you’re pregnant, I’m very disabled,” prompting laughter in the courtroom, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was a quip in testimony, not a medical finding.
Exchanges with Ellis’s lawyer
Coverage of Cardi B’s two days of testimony highlighted her colorful answers and back-and-forth with Ellis’s lawyer, Ron Rosen Janfaza. The Washington Post covered the exchanges as part of its account of the trial’s memorable moments. They were courtroom interactions, not separate findings by the jury.

The changing wigs
Cardi B appeared in different wigs and hairstyles on different trial days. AP reported that the changes even left her lawyer unsure which was her real hair; Cardi B joked that none of them were. The changing looks became a recurring feature in online clips and recaps.
The marker incident happened outside court
During a lunch break before the verdict, a man shouted questions at Cardi B about whether she was pregnant and who the father was. AP reported that she called the questions disrespectful and tossed a marker toward him. This happened outside the courtroom; it was not testimony and was not a basis for the jury’s verdict.

Her remarks after the verdict
After the jury ruled, Cardi B told reporters, “I will say it on my deathbed. I did not touch that woman.” She also said she would not settle a future claim she believed was unwarranted. Those were her post-verdict statements, not additional findings by the jury.
