The image did not identify his character. Esposito named him a month later: Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder.
What the June 2024 set photo showed
On June 1, 2024, ComicBook.com reported that Esposito had been photographed walking toward a location in a brown-lined coat and sunglasses. The outlet described knives and firearms as visible with the outfit and characterized the look as military-influenced. The image was credited to photographer Christopher Oquendo.
At the time, the report described Esposito’s character as unnamed. The costume could suggest an armed antagonist, but the photo alone did not establish that he was playing Sidewinder or any other specific Marvel character. This was entertainment reporting about a set image, not an official Marvel character reveal.
Who Giancarlo Esposito was playing
At Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in July 2024, Esposito identified his role as Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder. ComicBook.com reported that he announced, “I am the king of the Serpent Society.” That was Esposito speaking at the panel, rather than a line from an official Marvel press release.

D23’s later film coverage describes Voelker as leading a group of mercenaries called SERPENT. Director Julius Onah framed Sidewinder as a former military man who became a mercenary, contrasting his choices with Sam Wilson’s use of his expertise in service of others. As Onah put it, “He used to be a military man, like Sam, but he chose a different route in terms of how he decided to move through the world.”
Why the photo and the reveal are different moments
The set photo answered what Esposito looked like in character: an outfit reported to include weapons and to have a military-influenced style. The later panel identification supplied the name and alias. D23’s coverage added the character context—his leadership of SERPENT and his mercenary background. Keeping those steps separate avoids treating a suggestive costume as proof of an identity it had not yet confirmed.
