The Canning Show ran in Cannington, Western Australia, on November 3–4, 2023. Alongside fireworks both nights, carnival rides and live entertainment, that year’s event introduced the Canning Agricultural Pavilion, a market hall and the Canning Central outdoor lawn. The pavilion gave flower, fruit, herb and home-cooking exhibits a permanent home at the showgrounds.
What was on at the 2023 Canning Show?
PerthNow’s October 29, 2023 report described a mix of agricultural and community displays, carnival attractions and performances. The show’s program included regular carnival rides, Dangerous Delights fiery performances, fireworks on both nights, carnival games, giant inflatable soccer, live music and stage performances. Sheep-and-wheat-themed activities connected the entertainment to the event’s agricultural character. PerthNow’s report covered the 2023 program.
The City of Canning’s event listing also described animals, food, face painting, pony rides and performers, using terms including “Sideshow Wonderland rides,” “show bags,” “Farmland Animals” and “Food World.” That listing offers additional event context, but its accessible search description does not establish further program specifics. What changed with the showground redevelopment?
The redevelopment expanded the space available for displays and free activities. Three new facilities featured in the 2023 show: the Canning Agricultural Pavilion, a market hall and the Canning Central outdoor lawn area.

Canning Agricultural Pavilion
Opened on Friday, November 3, the pavilion was designed as a permanent venue for home gardening and amateur cooking interests. Its exhibits included flowers, fruit, herbs and home cooking projects, alongside the show’s other daily exhibits. It was also intended to host community events throughout the year.
CAHRS president Maxine Wiley called the opening “the icing on the Canning Show cake” and said the project had been nearly 20 years in the making. That duration is Wiley’s description of the project, not an independently documented construction timeline.

Market hall and outdoor lawn
The market hall and Canning Central lawn were also part of the new facilities highlighted for the 2023 event. PerthNow reported that the redevelopment created more room for displays and free activities; its account does not specify prices for individual attractions.
How did exhibits and entertainment fit together?
The 2023 show combined two kinds of experiences: agricultural and community exhibits, and rides or performances. The pavilion emphasized hands-on interests such as gardening and cooking, while the carnival rides, games, fiery show and stage entertainment supplied the spectacle. A separate question is whether an activity was described as free: the report mentions free activities but does not identify which specific attractions were free or list admission and ride prices.

What did CAHRS say about the project?
The redevelopment figures published by PerthNow were attributed to leaders of the Canning Agricultural, Horticultural and Recreational Society (CAHRS), the not-for-profit society behind the show. CAHRS chief executive Dianne Begg described the pavilion as the final step in a $10 million investment by the agricultural society. Begg also said 98 per cent of the redevelopment was funded independently by CAHRS, which she described as powered by more than 100 volunteers. These are figures reported from CAHRS statements, not independently audited totals.
CAHRS marketing, communications and strategy manager Aarom Wilson said the society had been trying to “revolutionise the Canning Show” for five years. He framed agricultural events as a way to inspire people and make learning part of the fun. Begg’s invitation to hobbyists was simple: “If you have the hobby or passion, just take the step forward. It’s about sharing and letting others be inspired by your ability.”
