The legal dispute linked to It Ends With Us began with Blake Lively’s allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation during the film’s production and promotion. Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer parties disputed her account and later brought their own claims. A federal judge dismissed most of Lively’s claims before the parties settled the claims that remained in May 2026. The settlement did not decide whether either side’s underlying allegations were true, and its terms were not publicly disclosed in the reporting reviewed. Post-settlement proceedings over Lively’s fees and costs continued through an August 26, 2026 order.
How the dispute began
It Ends With Us, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, starred Lively and Baldoni. The legal dispute arose from events Lively said took place during the film’s production and promotion. Her account and the opposing parties’ responses are allegations and arguments—not findings of fact simply because they appeared in legal filings.

On December 20, 2024, Lively filed an administrative complaint with the California Civil Rights Department alleging sexual harassment and retaliation. On December 31, she filed a federal lawsuit in the Southern District of New York. Her complaint included sexual-harassment, retaliation, contract and emotional-distress claims, among others. Baldoni and the Wayfarer parties denied her account.
In January 2025, the Wayfarer parties filed a separate lawsuit against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, publicist Leslie Sloane and Vision PR. They asserted claims including defamation and extortion. Those claims, too, were allegations, not established facts.

What the court decided—and what it did not
The cases moved through several distinct procedural stages. The difference matters: a claim can be alleged, dismissed, left for trial or resolved by settlement without a judge deciding that the underlying accusation was true.
| Date and stage | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| June 9, 2025: Wayfarer parties’ suit | The court dismissed the Wayfarer parties’ amended complaint against Lively and the other defendants. | The court’s dismissal was a ruling on that complaint; it did not establish the truth or falsity of every dispute about the film’s production. |
| April 2, 2026: Lively’s suit | Judge Lewis J. Liman granted defendants’ motions in substantial part. He dismissed Lively’s sexual-harassment claims and most of her other claims, while allowing specified retaliation and contract claims to proceed. | The claims left standing had not been proven. They were claims that could continue toward trial unless resolved another way. |
| May 2026: settlement | The parties settled Lively’s remaining claims shortly before trial. | A settlement ended those claims without a trial verdict on them. The reported settlement terms were not public. |
| June 12 and August 26, 2026: fee proceedings | The court addressed Lively’s request for attorneys’ fees and costs under California Civil Code § 47.1. The June order granted fees and costs but denied treble and punitive damages; the August order granted the fee motion in part and denied it in part. | These rulings concerned fees and costs, not a finding that all of Lively’s allegations were true. The reviewed orders do not establish a final fee total. |
Which claims survived before the settlement?
The April 2, 2026 order left a limited set of claims pending in Lively’s case:
Rank #2
- dvd, blu ray, film, movie
- Retaliation claims against Wayfarer and It Ends With Us Movie LLC.
- An aiding-and-abetting-retaliation claim against The Agency Group PR LLC.
- A claim under the Contract Rider Agreement against It Ends With Us Movie LLC.
These were not findings of liability. The parties settled before the scheduled trial could resolve them. The settlement therefore should not be described as a court ruling for either side on the underlying allegations.
What the settlement statement said
The parties’ joint statement after settlement said Lively’s concerns “deserved to be heard” and that they “remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.” That language reflects the parties’ shared public statement; it is not a judicial conclusion about what happened on set or during the film’s promotion.
Rank #3
- Blake Lively, Blu-ray Movies, Blu-ray TV Shows
The settlement terms were not announced in the public reporting reviewed. Without a public disclosure, it is not possible to say what payments, admissions, confidentiality provisions or other terms the agreement may contain.
Why the fee rulings are a separate issue
The fee proceedings followed the dismissal of the Wayfarer parties’ lawsuit. The court concluded that Lively was eligible to seek fees and costs under California Civil Code § 47.1 in connection with that suit. In its June 12, 2026 order, it granted fees and costs but denied treble and punitive damages. On August 26, the court issued a further opinion and order granting the fee motion in part and denying it in part.
A fee award is not the same as damages for the underlying dispute or a verdict on Lively’s claims against the film’s production entities. The orders reviewed do not provide a final total for recoverable fees, so a specific amount should not be treated as established here.

As of the latest substantive order identified in the reviewed material, the parties had settled the claims that remained for trial, and the court had issued further rulings on fees and costs. The reviewed account does not establish that the settlement terms became public or that the fee total was finalized. Because litigation records can change with later docket activity, any update beyond the August 26 order should be checked against the court docket.
