The films also come from different parts of the festival: not all 20 were in the Official Selection.
How to read this Cannes 2025 list
The 78th Festival de Cannes organized its Official Selection into Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition, Midnight Screenings, Cannes Premiere, and Special Screenings. The festival’s official selection and selection additions announcement are useful for distinguishing those titles from films in parallel sections. Rolling Stone’s list also included Directors’ Fortnight and Cannes Classics titles, so the roundup should not be treated as a list of 20 Official Selection films.
The descriptions below reflect the films’ premises and the reasons they drew attention around the festival, not reviews or claims about audience response.
What are the 20 most anticipated movies at Cannes 2025?

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which films stand out for actor-director debuts?
Three of the list’s clearest actor-to-director transitions are feature debuts: Kristen Stewart with The Chronology of Water, Scarlett Johansson with Eleanor the Great, and Harris Dickinson with Urchin. Their films offer very different starting points: memoir adaptation, intergenerational friendship, and a London-set story about a young man trying to change his life. Cannes also featured actor-director debut titles outside the Official Selection, including those by Johansson and Stewart in Un Certain Regard, and Dickinson in Directors’ Fortnight.
