Heartland opens its 18th season with Amy Fleming helping neighboring rancher Nathan Pryce prepare for a sheepdog competition—while a rival beef operation and looming water shortage put pressure on the family ranch. The “Yellowstone” comparison is a bit of positioning, not an official label: Heartland is a Canadian family drama centered on an Alberta ranch.
What the season 18 sneak peek shows
A reproduced search-result excerpt of Collider’s exclusive describes a clip from the season premiere, “True Grit,” in which Amy helps Nathan Pryce with a sheepdog competition. That moment brings the neighboring rancher into the story as more than a business rival, while the episode’s larger conflict puts Heartland up against Pryce Beef.

Super Channel’s episode synopsis likewise says Amy agrees to help Nathan in the competition as Heartland faces competition from Pryce Beef. The same synopsis points to another immediate threat: an approaching water shortage that strains Lou, Jack, and Tim. The clip description is attributed to the reproduced Collider excerpt; it is not a claim of firsthand viewing.
Why ranch life gets harder for the Bartlett-Fleming family
A new competitor nearby
UP Entertainment’s season overview describes a neighboring ranch as a source of fresh competition. The episode-one setup names that pressure more specifically through Pryce Beef. Amy’s decision to help Nathan therefore sits alongside the practical question of how the family will protect its own ranch amid a changing local cattle business.

Drought and water scarcity
The season’s second major pressure is drought. UP Entertainment says it threatens the herd, while Super Channel’s premiere synopsis frames the problem as a looming water shortage. These are connected but distinct descriptions: drought is the season-wide threat, and water scarcity is the immediate strain identified for the family in “True Grit.”
Different challenges for Amy and Lou
Amy’s season involves horse work as well as a romantic decision, according to UP Entertainment’s overview. Lou becomes more involved in the cattle business and clashes with Jack and Tim. Those storylines broaden the season beyond the premiere’s competition and water concerns, putting family relationships and ranch decisions under pressure at the same time.

What “Yellowstone replacement” means here
The comparison points to the ranch setting and family drama, not an official relationship between the shows. The available season descriptions establish Heartland as an Alberta ranch-centered family series, but do not describe it as a replacement for Yellowstone or as part of the same franchise. Heartland is based on Lauren Brooke’s books, according to UP Entertainment.
