How Apple TV+ offline viewing works
Offline viewing is a two-step process: download a title to a supported device while you have an internet connection, then play that saved copy in the Apple TV app when you are offline. You cannot start streaming a title after your connection is gone and expect it to play.
Downloads are stored on the device where you saved them. A download on an iPhone, for example, does not make the title available offline on a smart TV or Apple TV box. Apple’s current subscription guidance lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, and Apple Vision Pro as download-capable devices. The specific title must also be eligible, and availability can vary by region. That distinction matters when planning a trip: the Apple TV app may be available on the screen you use at home, but that does not make the screen a download destination. Save the title to a supported personal device first, and plan to play it from that device while you are without a connection.

Apple explicitly says that Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices, and tv.apple.com cannot download content from an Apple TV subscription. A practical option for a trip is to download a title to a supported phone, tablet, or computer before you leave. Apple’s guidance does not establish a way to transfer an Apple TV subscription download onto a TV device.
If you are deciding which device to prepare, first check that it is one of the supported download destinations and that you can access the Apple TV app and the title in your region. Then consider available storage, download quality and language settings, and whether the title’s expiration period and channel limits fit your plans. A smart TV or Apple TV box is not an alternative for this particular offline-download purpose, even if you normally watch Apple TV subscription content on it.
Download a show or movie before you go offline
On iPhone or iPad
- Connect to Wi-Fi, or first allow downloads over cellular in Settings > Apps > TV.
- Open the Apple TV app and find the eligible show, movie, or event.
- Tap Download. For a series, choose a season and download the whole season or individual episodes, depending on the available options.
- Open Library > Downloaded and check that the title appears there before you lose connectivity.
- When offline, open the downloaded title from that section to play it.
Downloading a series episode by episode can help you avoid saving more than you need, while choosing a full season is convenient when you expect to watch several episodes. The available choices depend on the title. If you are preparing for a flight or another period without service, finish the download and check the Downloaded section before leaving rather than relying on the title page or an in-progress download.
On Mac or PC
- Open the Apple TV app and locate the title while online.
- Use the title’s Download control. For a TV episode, Apple directs users to the episode’s More menu to find the download control.
- Check Library > Downloaded to confirm the item is available on the computer.
You can remove a downloaded item from the library when you no longer need it, freeing local storage. Apple’s Apple TV app library guide covers managing downloads and other library items.

On Apple Vision Pro
Find an eligible show, movie, or event in the Apple TV app, download it while online, then locate it under Library > Downloaded.
Check eligibility, storage, and download settings
A missing Download button does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your device. The channel may not allow downloads, or you may have reached a limit on the number of titles or devices. Apple says the app alerts you when you reach a subscription download limit; removing old downloads from your devices or your family’s devices may make room.
Downloads also use local storage. On iPhone and iPad, Apple TV app settings let you choose High Quality or Fast Downloads and select audio languages. High Quality uses more data and takes longer to download; each additional audio language increases file size. If storage or time is tight, choose settings and titles accordingly. - Using cellular data: Confirm that cellular downloads are allowed before relying on them away from Wi-Fi.
- Managing space: Remove completed or unwanted downloads in the app’s library before saving more.
- Choosing languages: Include only audio languages you need if you want to limit file size.
- Planning for a limit: Download only the episodes or films you need for the trip, and check the app for limit alerts.
Apple does not publish a universal download file size in the guidance cited here, so there is no single storage estimate that applies to every film or episode. The practical checks are the free space on the particular device, the quality setting, and the number of audio languages selected. If you run short on room, deleting downloads you have already watched is one way to make space before saving more.

Automatic downloads are an optional convenience, not a substitute for checking a specific trip’s preparation. Apple’s app guide describes automatic downloads on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but exact behavior depends on the device and library settings. If you need particular episodes for a journey, manually download them and confirm they appear under Downloaded.
How long downloads remain available
Offline availability is not necessarily permanent. Apple Support’s guidance, published August 19, 2026, says downloads from most Apple TV channels remain available for up to 30 days, though some channels expire sooner. For some Apple TV subscription titles, playback access ends 48 hours after you begin watching or 30 days after the download, whichever comes first. These are service rules, not a guarantee that every title follows the same schedule. Check the title’s availability before a long trip, especially if you plan to watch it over several days.
The two time periods answer different practical questions: a title can have a window measured from when it was downloaded, and some titles also have a shorter window once playback begins. Do not assume that starting an episode near the beginning of a trip guarantees access through the end. Apple’s stated rule for those subscription titles is whichever comes first: 48 hours after playback starts or 30 days after download. Other channels may have their own earlier expiration.
What the subscription download rules include—and exclude
Apple TV subscription content and Apple TV channels are not the only items found in the Apple TV app. Apple says its subscription does not include third-party branded subscription services or titles rented or purchased in the app. The cited subscription guidance does not establish identical download rules for those separate services and transactions, so do not assume that a title available in the app can be saved under the same conditions.

Regional availability and channel-specific rules can also affect what you can download. Before travel, check that the title is available to you and that its channel permits downloads. Apple’s subscription download guidance describes the applicable limits and notes that rules can vary.

- Choose a supported device. Use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, or Apple Vision Pro rather than relying on a smart TV or Apple TV box.
- Download while connected. Save the film, episodes, or event in the Apple TV app before departure.
- Confirm the completed download. Open Library > Downloaded and make sure the item is listed.
- Allow for the trip length. Consider the title’s expiry rules, particularly if you expect to start watching it well before the trip ends.
- Check storage and limits. Make sure the device has room and that the app has not reported a download limit.
Automatic downloads are also available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac according to Apple’s app guide, but the behavior depends on the device and library settings. They are optional; downloading titles manually and confirming them in Downloaded is the more direct preparation for a specific trip.
For a long journey, the most useful final check is not simply whether you tapped Download, but whether the item is listed as downloaded on the device you will take with you. This also helps distinguish an offline copy on your phone or computer from a title that you can usually stream at home but have not saved locally.
