Before building a continuous lecture stream from uploaded videos, confirm you have the necessary rights and that your chosen method meets YouTube’s current terms and live-stream requirements.
What unlisted means—and what it does not mean
An unlisted video normally does not appear in YouTube search or on your channel’s Videos tab. But it is not private: anyone who has the URL can watch it and share that link with others, and viewers do not need a Google Account. An unlisted video may also appear in search if it is added to a public playlist. YouTube’s visibility guide explains the distinction.
That setting controls discoverability and access by link; it does not grant a right to use the video as the source of a continuous public broadcast. If your goal is to limit who can see lecture material, an unlisted link is not a reliable access restriction.
Does YouTube confirm this 24/7 workflow?
YouTube documents live streaming through mobile, webcam, and encoder options, but its official setup guidance does not specifically confirm that existing unlisted video uploads can be relayed or looped as the source of a 24/7 broadcast. That gap is not proof that the workflow is either prohibited or approved. Do not treat unlisted visibility as authorization, and verify that the specific method you plan to use complies with YouTube’s current requirements before relying on it.

To live stream, YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for current eligibility and setup information. The available production paths vary in complexity: mobile or webcam streaming is more direct, while an encoder gives more production control. YouTube does not say a hardware encoder is mandatory; it describes software encoding options and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events.
Check rights before broadcasting lectures
If you own the lectures and control every element in them, check that your planned use and relay method meet YouTube’s terms. If the lectures belong to someone else, obtain the necessary rights before streaming them. This includes rights to music and other third-party material embedded in a lecture, not just permission to use the lecture recording itself.

YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have all necessary rights for the live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. Unlisted status does not change those obligations. This is practical platform guidance, not individualized legal advice.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limitation
A continuous broadcast and a complete recording of that broadcast are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete archive matters—for example, so students can revisit every lecture—keep a separate local recording rather than relying on the stream archive alone. Monetization is a separate decision
Having permission to use lecture material does not guarantee that a channel can monetize it. YouTube’s channel monetization policies say monetized content should be original and authentic. Reused material without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value may be ineligible, even when the uploader has permission. Consider monetization eligibility separately from the rights and technical questions.
