Not without the rights needed for the specific bhajan, recording, territories and uses. Devotional subject matter does not make a song or recording copyright-free. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if matched material continues after a warning. Even a licensed stream may be interrupted unless the rights owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Why a bhajan can involve several separate rights
“Bhajan” describes devotional subject matter, not the copyright status of a particular song or recording. A single track may contain several distinct works, with different owners and permissions:

India’s Copyright Act, 1957 recognizes musical works and sound recordings as distinct categories; the Government of India’s copyright explainer also identifies song lyrics as literary works. The status of any particular work depends on its creators, publication history, agreements, term and the territory where it is used. Do not assume an old, traditional or religious song—or a recording found online—is free to stream.
What YouTube may do during and after a live stream
While the stream is live
YouTube Help says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, YouTube may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder image. If the material continues, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Copyright strikes can also affect access to live streaming.

After the broadcast
An archived live stream can receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. Depending on the rights owner’s policy, a claim can monetize, track or block the video, and a policy may vary by country or region. A Content ID claim is not the same thing as a copyright takedown and strike, although either situation needs attention. If you intend to keep the archive available, clear that use as well as the live transmission.
A license does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming
YouTube advises creators using licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner or administrator to add their channel to the relevant Content ID allowlist. Without that step, a stream may still be interrupted—even if your license covers the relevant territories. A license and allowlisting are separate checks: one establishes permission under the agreement, while the other helps prevent an automated match from disrupting the broadcast.

How to check a bhajan before putting it on a 24/7 channel
- Identify the exact version. Record the song title, lyrics, composer, lyricist, arranger, performers, label or producer, and recording owner where you can establish them. Keep the specific recording or arrangement in view; a different version may have different rights.
- Map the rights you need. Check the lyrics, composition or arrangement, sound recording and any other material in the track. Identify the owners or authorized administrators for each relevant right rather than assuming one permission covers them all.
- Get written permission for the planned use. Confirm that it covers YouTube live transmission, continuous or repeated playback, the countries where the stream will be available, monetization, the intended duration and any edits or looping. Ask separately whether the archived broadcast can remain available after the live event.
- Request Content ID allowlisting. Before going live, ask the relevant owner or administrator to allowlist your YouTube channel for the specific content. Retain the written license and confirmation of allowlisting, along with contact details for disputes.
- Review the result across your catalogue. A playlist is only as cleared as its individual tracks. Check every recording and version, and keep the permission records matched to the items you actually play.
Owning a CD or downloading a music file does not, by itself, establish a right to stream the recording publicly. IPRS licensing guidance makes the broader distinction that buying a copy of music does not itself grant a public-performance license.
India’s religious-ceremony exception is narrow
Section 52(1)(za) of India’s Copyright Act provides an exception for specified performances or communications of literary, dramatic or musical works, and sound recordings, in the course of a bona fide religious ceremony. The Act’s wording includes a marriage procession and associated social festivities in its explanation of a religious ceremony.

That wording does not expressly settle whether an always-on public YouTube channel—especially one that runs continuously outside a ceremony or is monetized—qualifies. It is not a blanket exemption for bhajans, devotional programming or every livestream from a place of worship. If you want to rely on this exception, get advice about the facts and the rights involved rather than treating religious purpose as automatic permission.
These Indian-law points do not determine rights in every country where a YouTube stream is accessible. YouTube’s livestream terms require providers to warrant that they have the necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services throughout the world. Ownership, exceptions, licensing mandates and territorial scope can differ. For a stream intended for a worldwide audience, check the permissions and legal position for the territories that matter to your use.

Music sources and permissions to consider
- Rights-holder permission: Best suited to a planned catalogue of specific bhajans and recordings. Confirm the rights, territories and uses it covers, then request Content ID allowlisting for the channel.
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube recommends its Audio Library as a source of copyright-safe music. Check the terms for the particular track and the use you intend; do not assume every track has identical conditions.
- Creator Music: Do not assume that a Creator Music track is cleared for a live broadcast. YouTube’s cited revenue-sharing track terms say videos using those tracks cannot be live streams. Check the current terms for the individual track and planned use.
For India-specific licensing, IPRS describes licensing for musical works and associated lyrics, including communication and making available. Check whether the particular works are in its repertoire and whether the license covers this YouTube use. Do not infer that a society license also clears a separate sound recording or rights outside that society’s mandate.
Before you schedule the stream
- Do you know which exact recording and arrangement will play?
- Have you identified and cleared the lyrics, composition, recording and any other relevant rights?
- Does the written permission cover continuous playback, the intended territories, monetization and the archive?
- Has the relevant rights owner or administrator confirmed Content ID allowlisting for your channel?
- Can you quickly stop or replace a track if YouTube issues a warning or a rights dispute arises?
If an answer is no, do not treat the stream as cleared. Pause the track or use music whose terms you have checked until you can resolve the missing permission or platform step.
