Apple lets you share eligible Apple TV subscriptions with a Family Sharing group of up to six people total: one organizer and up to five other family members. Each person uses their own Apple Account. Apple TV profiles are a separate feature for keeping viewers’ watchlists, viewing history, and recommendations apart; creating a profile by itself does not grant subscription access.
Family Sharing and Apple TV profiles do different things
Family Sharing is the mechanism for sharing eligible subscriptions and, separately, certain purchases among family members. Profiles personalize the Apple TV experience for different viewers. Apple distinguishes the two: “Family Sharing, which works across all your Apple devices, is different than having multiple profiles on Apple TV 4K.” Apple’s Family Sharing guide explains the group, while its Apple TV 4K guide covers device profiles.

How to share an eligible Apple TV subscription
- Set up Family Sharing. The organizer creates the group and invites family members from a Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Family Sharing cannot be initiated or configured directly on Apple TV 4K.
- Have each person use their own Apple Account. Family Sharing connects the group’s eligible access; it does not mean everyone should share one account.
- Check subscription sharing if someone lacks access. On the organizer’s iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [name] > Subscriptions > Manage Family Access > Share Eligible Subscriptions. Apple says eligible subscriptions are shared automatically in many cases, but availability depends on the subscription and region. See Apple’s subscription-sharing guidance.
How to add or switch profiles
On Apple TV 4K
Apple documents these profile controls on Apple TV 4K:
- Go to Settings > Profiles and Accounts > Add New Profile to add a profile.
- Use Control Center to switch profiles.
- Choose a profile from the Apple TV app sidebar where that option is available.
An Apple Account profile can also manage up to five household profiles that do not need their own Apple Accounts. Profile availability and controls can vary with device and software version. Consult Apple’s Apple TV 4K user guide for the applicable controls.

On supported televisions and other living-room devices
The Apple TV app also supports Apple Account profiles and managed profiles on certain televisions and other devices. The available profile features depend on the device and region; Apple describes the options in its Apple TV app profile guide.
Set child restrictions and understand profile privacy
Apple documents age-appropriate restrictions for managed profiles, as well as content restrictions and an optional four-digit code for profile access in Apple TV app settings. The managing profile can access playback and search data for managed profiles. That matters if you are choosing a managed profile for a child or another household viewer: it separates the experience, but does not make that data private from the managing profile. Purchased movies, apps, and other content are separate
Sharing an eligible subscription does not automatically share every item a family member has bought. Access to eligible apps, movies, books, and other purchases depends on Purchase Sharing, and some items cannot be shared. Apple also says family members need to use the same Apple Account country or region to share purchased content. For children, Screen Time and Ask to Buy settings can affect downloads.
