What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but the right method depends on who is watching and what they want to watch. People in the same home can use separate Prime Video profiles or an eligible Amazon Family arrangement. A friend at another address may be able to use the same login technically, but sharing an Amazon password exposes shopping and payment features and is not a household-sharing method Amazon clearly recommends. Purchased movies, rentals, third-party channels and live events have separate rules.
For U.S. subscribers, use this quick guide:
- Same household: Create separate profiles, or use Amazon Family when separate Amazon accounts are needed.
- Child or teen: Use a Kids profile or the appropriate Amazon Family account with parental controls.
- Someone at another address: Do not rely on credential sharing; a separate subscription is safer.
- Purchased, rented or add-on content: Check the title or provider’s specific terms.
What “sharing Prime Video” can mean
There are four different arrangements that are often confused:
Separate profiles on one Amazon account
Everyone signs in through the same Amazon account but chooses an individual Prime Video profile. Profiles separate recommendations, watchlists, history and Continue Watching rows. They do not create separate Amazon accounts, billing identities or ownership rights.
Amazon Family for household members
Amazon renamed Amazon Household to Amazon Family in March 2025. Eligible household members can use their own Amazon accounts while sharing selected Prime benefits. Amazon describes a structure of up to two adults, up to four teens and up to four children, although the benefits and controls shown in your account can vary. See Amazon’s current explanation.

Sharing an Amazon login with someone elsewhere
This can sometimes play video, but the login is also an Amazon shopping account. It may expose orders, addresses, payment methods, account settings and security controls. It is not a good recommendation for a friend, relative or partner who lives elsewhere.
Sharing a particular purchase, rental or channel
A Prime-included program, a movie you bought, a rental and a third-party channel subscription are different entitlements. Access to one does not establish access to the others.
How many people can watch at once?
Amazon’s U.S. Prime Video usage rules generally allow up to three videos at the same time on one account and the same title on up to two devices. These are stream limits, not a promise that three people can watch every program simultaneously. Location, title, provider, subscription type and live-event rules can reduce the allowance. Some add-on channels permit the same title on only one device, and live pay-per-view events can be stricter. Check Amazon’s usage rules.
Six profiles also does not mean six simultaneous viewers: one account can have one default profile plus up to five additional adult or Kids profiles, but the stream limits still apply. See Prime Video profile help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to create a separate Prime Video profile
- Open Prime Video and sign in.
- Select the profile icon or current profile name.
- Choose Add new or Create profile.
- Enter a name and select an adult or Kids profile where your device offers that choice.
- Save it, then switch profiles from the same menu.
Labels differ by television, browser, phone, game console and app version, so look for the profile-selection menu if the wording is different. A profile personalizes Prime Video but does not hide the underlying Amazon account or transfer purchases to another person.

Amazon lists profile locks, PIN resets and profile-creation controls in its Prime Video help center.
How Amazon Family works
Amazon Family is designed for people in the same household, not as a general remote-sharing plan. Amazon says one adult supplies the Prime membership, adults use their own Amazon accounts, and the feature is free to set up; the Prime membership itself is not free.
- Open Amazon’s Amazon Family or household-management page.
- Choose Add Adult, Add a Teen or Add a Child.
- For another adult, send an invitation or complete setup together.
- The invited adult accepts and signs in with their own Amazon account.
- Review benefit-sharing, content-sharing and payment settings before finishing.
- Open Prime Video through the invited account, where the applicable benefit is supported.
Amazon’s public material says Prime Video can be one of the shared Prime benefits. However, an Amazon support response says a standalone Prime Video-only membership cannot be shared through Amazon Family. Do not assume that a video-only subscription transfers to another adult account; check the current eligibility shown in Amazon Family. Sources: Amazon’s Prime Family explanation and Amazon support.
Privacy and payment implications
Separate adult accounts reduce the need to share one password, but Amazon Family can involve shared payment methods, Prime benefits and selected digital-content settings. Review those choices rather than assuming complete separation. Amazon says adults ordinarily cannot see one another’s orders in the normal adult-account experience, but the family configuration still creates shared settings. See Amazon’s Family guidance.
If someone leaves Amazon Family, Amazon says they lose shared Prime benefits and shared content access and cannot join another household for 180 days under the currently stated policy.

Can you share Prime Video with someone in another home?
Do not present this as an officially supported household benefit. Giving someone your Amazon credentials may work for ordinary playback, but it also gives them the security boundary of your shopping account. It can create payment, privacy, regional-catalog and stream-limit problems, and Amazon’s terms and availability can change by location.
Safer options are:
- Have the other person subscribe on their own Amazon account.
- Use Amazon Family only when both people meet the current household and membership requirements.
- Buy or rent a title on the viewer’s own account.
- Watch together using a currently supported synchronized-watch feature if one is offered in your region and on your devices; do not assume availability.
What can be shared?
| Content or access | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Prime-included streaming | Usually available under the qualifying account or eligible household arrangement, subject to stream, title and regional limits. |
| Prime Video profile | Available within the same Amazon account; it does not create separate credentials or billing. |
| Purchased movie or show | Do not assume it transfers to another account or Amazon Family profile. Amazon support has stated that purchased titles cannot be shared across accounts or Family profiles. |
| Rental | Use the purchasing account and follow its rental window and device restrictions. Amazon support has stated that rentals cannot be shared across accounts or Family profiles. |
| Third-party channel | Provider-specific rules apply. Some channels restrict the same title to one device, and downloads and device limits vary. |
| Live or pay-per-view event | Often has stricter, event-specific stream limits. |
The purchase and rental limitation is based on an Amazon support response and may change as Amazon’s products and policies change. Check the title’s current detail page and account settings. Source: Amazon support on purchases and rentals.
Add-on subscriptions also carry separate fees and terms. Amazon’s rules allow general account limits to vary by provider; review Prime Video terms and the channel’s own conditions before relying on the ordinary three-stream rule.
Downloads are not permanent sharing
Many subscription titles can be downloaded temporarily, but not every title is downloadable. Amazon generally describes 30 days to start watching a download and usually 48 hours to finish after playback begins; title, device, location and subscription restrictions apply. A download remains controlled by the account and cannot be treated as a permanent copy for another viewer. Details are in Amazon’s usage rules.
Fix common sharing problems
“Too many devices” or playback-limit error
- Stop playback on devices nobody is using.
- Close Prime Video completely and sign out of unused devices.
- Deregister stale devices in Amazon account settings.
- Wait briefly for the session to clear, then try again.
- Try another title to see whether the restriction is title-specific.
- Check the title, channel or live-event rules before contacting Amazon support.
Typical causes include three active streams, the same title already playing on two devices, a one-device channel restriction, a live-event limit or a stale session.

The second adult cannot see Prime Video
- The membership may be Prime Video-only rather than an eligible full Prime membership.
- The invitation may not have been accepted.
- The people may not meet the current household arrangement.
- Benefit sharing may be disabled.
- The viewer may be using a different Amazon marketplace or region.
- The title may be a purchase, rental or add-on that is not shared.
The wrong person can buy something
Stop using a shared Amazon password, remove the device, change the password, enable two-step verification and set purchase controls or PINs where available. For eligible household members, separate adult accounts through Amazon Family are safer than a shared login.
Country and catalog differences
This guide assumes the United States. Amazon says availability, catalogs, add-on channels, downloads and usage restrictions can vary by location. Someone traveling or living abroad may not see the same titles even when using the same account, and country-specific terms control. See Prime Video’s location and usage rules.
Which option fits your situation?
| Situation | Best approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse or family member in the same home | Separate profile, or Amazon Family if separate Amazon accounts are needed | Profiles share one login; Family may involve shared payment settings |
| Child | Kids profile or Amazon Family child account | Parental controls can restrict content |
| Teen | Amazon Family teen account where available | Parent controls and purchase review may apply |
| Roommate | Profile sharing may work; verify Family eligibility carefully | Privacy and household boundaries can be complicated |
| Friend at another address | Separate subscription | Costs more, but keeps billing and security separate |
| Specific purchased movie | Use the purchasing account | Do not assume Family or profiles transfer ownership |
| Specific channel | Check that provider’s rules | Same-title and download limits may be lower |
Does a higher stream tier solve sharing?
Amazon announced Prime Video Ultra in March 2026 as a $4.99-per-month ad-free upgrade with up to five concurrent streams, up to 100 downloads and 4K/UHD access. Those limits still depend on title, device and provider restrictions, and a higher stream allowance does not make purchases shareable or turn remote credential sharing into an Amazon Family arrangement. Verify current availability and price before subscribing: Amazon’s announcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I share Prime Video with my spouse?
Yes. If you live together, use a separate Prime Video profile or an eligible Amazon Family setup. Profiles share one underlying Amazon account; Family uses separate adult accounts but may involve shared benefit and payment settings.
Can I share Prime Video with a friend?
A shared login may work technically, but it exposes Amazon shopping and payment access and is not a household-sharing arrangement Amazon clearly recommends. A separate subscription is safer.

Can two people watch different shows at the same time?
Ordinary Prime Video rules generally allow up to three simultaneous videos on one account, subject to title, provider, location and live-event restrictions.
Can two people watch the same movie?
Generally, the same title can play on up to two devices, but add-on channels, rentals, purchases and live events may impose stricter limits.
Can I share a purchased movie?
Do not assume so. Amazon support has stated that purchased and rented Prime Video titles cannot be shared across Amazon accounts or Amazon Family profiles.
How many Prime Video profiles can I create?
One Amazon account can have one default profile plus up to five additional adult or Kids profiles—six profiles total.
The Bottom Line
Use profiles for simple same-account viewing, Amazon Family for an eligible household with separate adult accounts, and separate subscriptions for people who live elsewhere. Treat purchases, rentals, add-on channels and live events as separate entitlements, and never forget that a shared Prime Video login can also open the broader Amazon shopping account.
