Yes. Google Drive can store movie files and play many of them in a browser or the mobile app. Upload the file with New → File upload, wait for processing, then open it in Drive. Google’s player supports up to 1920 × 1080 playback, so storing a 4K file does not mean Drive will stream it in 4K.
The technical answer is separate from the legal one. Upload or share only films you created, public-domain or appropriately licensed works, or files whose licence and local law permit the intended copying and audience. Google Drive is convenient for authorized screeners, projects and occasional viewing—not a way to bypass copyright, DRM or distribution restrictions.
Can Google Drive store movie files?
Drive stores videos as ordinary files; you do not need to convert them to a Google-native format. Google lists WebM, MPEG-4, 3GPP, MOV, AVI, MPEGPS, WMV, FLV, MTS and OGG among supported video types. Compatibility still depends on the file’s codecs, audio tracks, subtitles, browser and device. See Google’s current format guidance at Google Drive video specifications.
A file can be stored only while your account has enough available capacity. Google says a video may be up to 5 TB when the account has purchased at least 5 TB of storage; otherwise, available storage is the practical limit. Google’s general Drive documentation also lists up to 5 TB for other files when sufficient storage exists (file-size limits).

Uploading and playback are separate stages. Drive may let you watch in the same browser session while processing continues, but another device or shared viewer may have to wait.
How to upload a movie to Google Drive
From a computer
- Go to drive.google.com and open the destination folder, or stay in My Drive.
- Click New, then File upload.
- Select the movie file.
- Wait for the upload and processing indicators to finish.
- Double-click the file to test playback.
Videos can be uploaded to private or shared folders, subject to the folder’s permissions.
From Android
- Open Photos or a file-manager app and select the video.
- Tap Share, choose Drive, select the account and destination folder, then tap Save.
Labels vary by phone maker and Android version. Google recommends Wi-Fi for better upload performance; its Android instructions are at Google’s Drive help page.
If the upload fails
- Check remaining Drive storage.
- Retry on a stable connection; use Wi-Fi on a phone.
- Try another browser, an incognito window, or the Drive app.
- Disable an extension that interferes with uploads or clear conflicting cookies.
- Use Drive for desktop or confirm that a work or school administrator allows the upload.
How to play a movie in Drive
Desktop
- Open Drive and locate the file. To narrow results, use the search bar’s Type → Videos filter.
- Double-click the movie.
- Use the player controls or full-screen mode.
Android
- Open the Drive app.
- Tap the search bar and choose Videos.
- Tap the movie.
Drive is useful for “open and watch” playback, but it is not a full media-server library. It offers limited cataloguing and poster management, and subtitle, alternate-audio and high-bitrate playback can vary by format and device. Smooth playback also depends on your connection.

Supported formats: why the extension is not enough
Google’s documented list includes:
- WebM
- MPEG-4
- 3GPP
- MOV
- AVI
- MPEGPS
- WMV
- FLV
- MTS
- OGG
A container name such as .mp4 or .mov does not identify every codec inside it. Google gives examples including H.264/MPEG-4 video with AAC audio for MPEG-4, 3GPP and MOV; MJPEG with PCM audio for AVI; and MPEG-2 with MP2 audio for MPEGPS. Two files with the same extension can therefore behave differently.
If Drive reports that a video is unplayable, test the original locally in VLC or another trusted player. After processing and browser checks, re-upload it. If necessary, make a compatible copy using H.264 video and AAC audio in an MP4 container; keep the original because conversion can reduce quality. Google’s troubleshooting guidance is at this help page. Google’s cited format list does not include MKV, so do not assume MKV playback without testing or conversion.
Google Drive movie limits
| Limit or condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Maximum stored video | Up to 5 TB when at least 5 TB of Drive storage has been purchased; otherwise limited by available storage. |
| Maximum built-in playback | 1920 × 1080 (1080p), even when the stored file is higher resolution. |
| Minimum stated playback size | 4 KB. |
| Processing | Playback may work for the uploader before the file is ready on other devices or for shared viewers. |
| Performance | Internet speed, device capability and file bitrate affect buffering and reliability. |
These are different constraints: storage determines whether the file fits, the player determines rendered resolution, and bandwidth determines whether playback is smooth. A 4K movie can be stored if it fits, but Drive’s stated 1080p ceiling means its built-in player is not a 4K streaming solution.
Can you stream movies from Google Drive?
Yes. A supported, processed file can play directly without a full download first. That makes Drive practical for a small collection, a private screener or an occasional viewing session. It is less suitable when you need automatic metadata, a large multi-library catalogue, guaranteed subtitle and audio-track behavior, or predictable television playback.

Can you watch a Drive movie offline?
You can download the file and play the local copy with a compatible player. The device needs enough free storage, and the download remains subject to the same copyright, licence and DRM rules. Downloading does not grant permission to redistribute the movie.
Can you share a movie from Google Drive?
Technically, yes. Drive lets you share with named people or change General access to Anyone with the link, depending on account and administrator restrictions. Owners can assign Viewer, Commenter or Editor roles and can control whether viewers and commenters may download, print or copy. Details are in Google’s sharing documentation.
- Right-click the movie and choose Share.
- Add specific email addresses, or adjust General access.
- Use Viewer unless collaboration requires more.
- Review download, print and copy settings.
- Click Send or Copy link.
- Test the result in an incognito window or with a test account.
“Anyone with the link” is link-based access, not person-specific security. Recipients can potentially capture or redistribute content, and technical controls cannot prevent every copy. Folder permissions may flow down to the file, while work and school accounts may block external sharing. A viewer who is not signed in may also encounter a playback limit and be asked to sign in.
Is it legal to upload a movie?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. The relevant questions are who owns or licenses the work, how the file was made, where you are, and who will receive it. Google says users retain their intellectual-property rights in uploaded content, but users must verify that their intended media use is licensed or otherwise permitted (ownership information; media-rights guidance).

Usually lower-risk examples
- A film you created and control.
- A public-domain film.
- A work released under a licence allowing storage and the planned sharing.
- An authorized screener or production asset sent to festival staff, clients, educators or collaborators.
Cases requiring careful checking
- Ripping a DVD or Blu-ray.
- Copying a purchased digital movie.
- Removing DRM.
- Using a file obtained through an unauthorized download or torrent.
- Sharing privately or publicly with people outside the licence.
- Uploading to a workplace or school account under organization rules.
Backup exceptions, anti-circumvention rules and licence terms differ by country. Possessing a disc or paying for a stream does not automatically authorize public redistribution. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why a movie may not play
| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Video is unplayable” | Unsupported codec/container, corrupt upload or incomplete processing. | Wait, refresh, test locally, re-upload, or convert a copy to H.264/AAC MP4. |
| “Still processing” | Drive has not finished preparing the file. | Wait and retry from another device; do not assume same-session playback is ready for others. |
| Shared viewer cannot open it | Permission, sign-in, organization or device-compatibility issue. | Check General access, share directly, ask the viewer to sign in, test privately, or provide an authorized download. |
| Playback buffers or stops | Connection, device or high-bitrate limitations. | Try a compatible lower-bitrate copy or download for local playback. |
| 4K appears as 1080p | Drive’s 1920 × 1080 playback ceiling. | Use a local player or media server for 4K. |
For policy-related restrictions, Google says users can request a review when they believe a violation notice is incorrect; Drive content remains subject to Google’s terms and policies (policy information).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Drive suitable for a movie collection?
| Option | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive/Google One | Small collections, project files, screeners and simple private sharing. | 1080p playback ceiling, limited library features, recurring storage cost and internet dependence. Storage upgrades are described at Google One. |
| External drive | Offline access, high-bitrate or 4K files and one-time capacity. | No automatic remote access; drive failure or loss requires an independent backup plan. A 3-2-1 backup approach is sensible. |
| NAS or home media server | Large authorized libraries, household streaming, metadata, posters, subtitles and audio-track control. | Hardware, setup, maintenance and network configuration; remote streaming needs sufficient upload bandwidth. |
| Licensed streaming or digital stores | Watching commercial films without managing files. | Catalogues, territories, offline features and access terms vary; a subscription or purchase is not necessarily an unrestricted transferable file. |
A media server changes storage and playback architecture, not copyright obligations. Choose Drive when convenience and occasional access matter more than a polished library or 4K playback.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Drive play MOV or AVI files?
Both are on Google’s documented format list, but the codecs and audio inside the file still determine compatibility.
Can I store a 4K movie in Drive?
Yes, if it fits your storage allowance, but Drive’s built-in player is limited to 1920 × 1080 playback.
Does Google Drive support MKV?
MKV is not included in Google’s cited supported-format list. Test it, and convert a copy if Drive cannot play it.
Can I share a movie with family?
Only when your rights or licence permit that sharing. Use named viewers for tighter access; a link can be forwarded.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why is my video still processing?
Drive may still be preparing the file. Wait, refresh, and test again from another device before concluding that sharing has failed.
Is Google Drive better than a USB drive or Plex?
Drive is simpler for cloud access and small collections. A USB drive suits offline high-bitrate playback, while a NAS or media server offers richer library and household-streaming features.
The Bottom Line
Google Drive is a convenient place to store and occasionally play movie files you are authorized to possess and use. Its player tops out at 1080p, and it is not a replacement for a dedicated 4K media server. Do not use Drive to distribute unauthorized copies or assume that owning a movie permits every kind of copying or sharing.
