Memberships are a paid channel feature with creator-defined perks; livestreaming is only needed for certain optional features, such as gifting memberships in live chat.
How memberships work without livestreams
YouTube channel memberships let viewers pay for recurring access to perks you set up for your channel. You can deliver those perks through uploaded content and channel features rather than live broadcasts. YouTube describes memberships as a feature creators set up and manage in YouTube Studio; its general setup guidance does not make livestreaming a prerequisite. YouTube’s membership setup guidance
Non-live perks can include badges, custom emoji, posts, members-first videos, Shorts, and members-only videos. A members-only livestream is one possible perk, not a requirement. What you need to enable memberships
You must meet YouTube’s general fan-funding requirements and the specific membership criteria, including location availability and policy conditions. Requirements and availability can change, so check the Memberships area in YouTube Studio and the current eligibility information linked there rather than relying on a partial checklist. Set up levels and non-live perks
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to the Memberships area and check whether your channel is eligible to turn the feature on.
- Enable memberships and create levels. You can create up to six levels at different prices. Each level needs one to five perks.
- Choose perks you can deliver without going live. Consider badges, custom emoji, posts, members-first videos, Shorts, or members-only videos.
- Submit perks for review. YouTube checks perks against its policies before they become available to members.
- Publish and manage the offer in Studio. You can run the program around uploaded and community content; you do not need to schedule a livestream to maintain memberships.
Which membership features do require livestreaming?
Membership gifting is separate from the ordinary membership program. To gift memberships, a creator or viewer uses live chat during a livestream or Premiere. That live-chat requirement applies to gifting; it does not mean your channel must livestream to offer regular memberships. YouTube’s membership gifting guidance
Similarly, a members-only livestream is live by definition, but it is only one possible perk. If you do not stream, use other eligible perks instead. YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements are separate from membership eligibility. YouTube’s livestreaming guidance

Why a viewer may not see the Join button
If memberships are enabled but a viewer cannot find Join, the cause may be on the channel, the viewer’s side, or the page or platform they are using. YouTube lists creator settings, country or region availability, platform coverage, and watch-page restrictions among possible reasons. YouTube’s guidance on joining a channel
- Check the channel homepage. YouTube recommends trying the channel homepage if Join is missing elsewhere.
- Try the channel’s /join link. Add
/jointo the end of the channel URL when the issue may be related to the platform or watch page. - Check availability and settings. The creator may not have enabled memberships, or memberships may not be available in the viewer’s or creator’s region.
Keep memberships separate from your streaming setup
You do not need a streaming service to offer non-live membership perks.
