You can set a YouTube livestream to Unlisted so people with its link can watch it, while it generally stays off your channel’s Videos tab and out of YouTube search. Unlisted is not private: viewers can pass the link on, and anyone who receives it can watch.
What “Unlisted” means for a livestream
Unlisted controls discoverability, not who is permitted to view. YouTube says streamers can set a livestream to public, private, or unlisted. An unlisted stream is useful when you want to share a direct link with a specific audience without promoting it for broad discovery.
- People with the link can watch. They do not need to be on a named invitation list, and they can reshare the link.
- It generally is not discoverable through your channel or search. Unlisted content normally does not appear in the channel’s Videos tab or YouTube search. YouTube documents an exception for unlisted videos added to a public playlist: they may then appear in search.
- It is not confidential access control. If the link reaches someone you did not intend to invite, that person may be able to watch.
These visibility distinctions are described in YouTube’s guidance on video privacy settings and its live stream settings.
Unlisted vs. public vs. private
| Setting | Who can watch | Link sharing | Discovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone | Anyone can share the link | Available for public discovery, including through YouTube surfaces such as search and the channel |
| Unlisted | Anyone who has the link | Viewers can reshare the link | Generally omitted from the channel’s Videos tab and search; an unlisted video in a public playlist may appear in search |
| Private | The creator and people selected under YouTube’s private-sharing controls | Not open to everyone with a link | Not publicly discoverable |
Choose Unlisted for link-based viewing without ordinary public discovery. Choose Private if you need YouTube’s more restricted sharing controls. Choose Public when viewers should be able to find the stream broadly.

Eligibility still applies
Changing visibility does not bypass YouTube’s livestream requirements. YouTube’s current Help guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. A person must be at least 16 to livestream. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder streams; the visibility setting is separate from the equipment or method used.
Check YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance before planning an event, especially if the channel is new or has had a restriction.

How to set a YouTube livestream to Unlisted
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a livestream. Use the workflow for your chosen format—mobile, webcam, or encoder.
- Open the stream’s details and find Visibility. Select Unlisted rather than Public or Private.
- Confirm the setting before going live. Defaults can differ based on age, so do not assume the stream is unlisted without checking its details. YouTube says streamers can change the visibility setting among public, private, and unlisted.
- Copy and share the stream link with your intended audience. Anyone who gets the link may watch and pass it on.
YouTube also notes that a stream can be set to public or unlisted before it starts in its live streaming tips.
Plan for discovery and audience access
An unlisted stream is a practical fit for a documentary screening shared with a class, members, collaborators, or a small invited audience when broad discovery is not wanted. Send the link through the channel you intend to use, and remember that the link itself can travel beyond that group.

If you want viewers to find the event, YouTube recommends sharing the link in advance; it also notes that making an archive public can increase reach. Subscribers may receive notifications for public events, so an unlisted event has a different discovery profile. See YouTube’s live streaming tips for its recommendations.
Check the archive after the broadcast
Do not assume the finished recording has the visibility you intended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and the archive has its own visibility control. After the broadcast, open the archived video’s details in YouTube Studio and check its visibility separately. If the recording should remain link-accessible, make sure the archive is also set to Unlisted; if it should be broadly discoverable, choose Public.
