Yes. YouTube can issue a copyright strike if it removes your livestream following a valid copyright removal request. A book being in the public domain does not automatically make a particular audiobook recording free to stream: the text and the recording can have separate rights. A Content ID claim alone is not a strike.
Why a public-domain book may still pose a copyright risk
Copyright status has at least two parts here: the underlying words and the specific performance or recording you plan to play. A text may be public domain while a narrator’s performance, a particular recording, or an audiobook release has separate rights or license terms. The book’s title or age alone cannot establish the status of the audio file.
YouTube says public-domain status can be complicated to verify and does not maintain an official list of public-domain works. Check the exact recording and the rights or license attached to it. The status can also vary by territory, so consider where the stream will be available. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains that none of the common ways to avoid copyright problems guarantees that a video will avoid a claim or strike.
What YouTube may do when it detects audio in a livestream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may warn you and show a placeholder. If the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Detection or interruption alone is not the same as a copyright strike; a strike follows a valid copyright removal request.

Content ID claim versus copyright strike
- Content ID claim: Depending on the claimant’s settings, a claim can track, monetize, or block content. A claim is not itself a copyright strike.
- Copyright strike: A strike follows a valid copyright removal request. YouTube says that if an active livestream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a strike and live-streaming access is restricted for 7 days. Its guidance says a further strike can bring a 14-day restriction; three copyright strikes in 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. See Understand copyright strikes.
These are YouTube’s stated policy consequences, not a prediction that a particular audiobook will be detected or removed. Policy details can change, so consult the current guidance before streaming.
How to check an audiobook before streaming it
- Identify the exact audio file. Record where it came from, who performed or produced it, and which release or edition it is. Do not rely on the book’s publication date or a description that simply calls the audiobook “public domain.”
- Check the recording’s rights and license. Look for explicit terms covering livestreaming and any required attribution or restrictions. Verify the basis for public-domain use in the territories where your stream may be available.
- Keep evidence. Save the license, rights statement, source details, and any records supporting your public-domain assessment. These may help explain your position if a claim or removal request occurs.
- Review a claim in YouTube Studio. Check the claimant and the segment identified. Dispute only when you have a valid basis and can substantiate the rights. YouTube warns that disputing without a valid reason can lead the claimant to request removal; a valid removal request can result in a strike. See Dispute a Content ID claim.
YouTube’s Content ID reference eligibility rules require exclusive rights and list public-domain recordings and compositions as ineligible reference material. That rule governs what a Content ID partner may submit as reference material; it is not a guarantee that every recording labelled public domain will avoid an erroneous claim or takedown. See Content eligible for Content ID.

Copyright enforcement and monetization are separate questions
A livestream can raise a monetization-policy issue even when you have the rights to the audio. YouTube’s monetization rules apply to live streams and address repetitive or mass-produced content. Looping an audiobook therefore does not, by itself, establish that the channel or stream qualifies for monetization. This policy question is separate from whether the recording infringes copyright, and it does not mean that a loop automatically receives a copyright strike. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

If the exact recording is licensed for your use or you have a sound basis for treating it as public domain, you can choose how to keep the livestream running. Whatever method you use, it cannot resolve uncertain rights or prevent a copyright removal request.
