Not every title, plan, or device qualifies, and downloads are temporary app-controlled copies—not video files you can keep or transfer.
What “download Hulu” means
There are two different things people mean by downloading Hulu: installing the Hulu app, and downloading a show or movie inside that app. Hulu supports the second for select titles, so you can watch them without an internet connection. The downloaded content stays under Hulu’s app and account controls; Hulu does not provide it as an ordinary MP4 or other transferable file.

Hulu’s current U.S. plan information describes downloads as available for “select Hulu titles” on a “supported device.” That wording matters: access depends on the title, subscription, device, and applicable viewing rights. Hulu’s plan information and its offline-download Help Center page are the places to check current terms.
What you need before downloading
- An eligible subscription: Hulu’s public pages do not establish a definitive current plan-by-plan rule. If offline viewing is why you are subscribing, confirm that your exact plan qualifies with Hulu before paying.
- A supported device and current app: Streaming support does not automatically mean a device can store downloads. Check Hulu’s supported-device information and its iOS or Android requirements as applicable.
- A title with download rights: Look for a Download control on the show, episode, or movie. A series may have some downloadable episodes and others that are unavailable.
- Available storage and an internet connection: Downloads need space on the device and a connection while they are being saved. Use Wi-Fi if you want to avoid using cellular data.
How to download a Hulu show or movie
- Install or update the official Hulu app on a supported phone or tablet, then sign in to the account you intend to use.
- Search for a show or movie, or browse any downloadable-content collection shown in your version of the app.
- Open the title’s details page. If a Download icon or button appears, the title is available to download under your current setup.
- For a series, use the control beside an eligible episode; do not assume that one tap downloads a whole season.
- Wait for the download to finish, then open the app’s Downloads area and confirm the title appears there.
- Before you travel, turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data—or enable airplane mode—and try playing the title from Downloads.
The exact labels may vary by app version. Hulu’s October 7, 2019 announcement described a title-level download icon and a Downloads tab; use the controls in the current app rather than relying on old menu instructions.

How offline playback works
Start playback from the Hulu app’s Downloads area. A download is licensed for app-controlled offline viewing, not permanent ownership. Hulu may require the account to reconnect for authorization, and a download can stop working if its license expires or the title leaves the service. Reconnect periodically, especially on a long trip.
Do not sign out, uninstall Hulu, or clear the app’s storage before traveling: those actions may remove downloaded content or its access information. The safest check is to play the title with all network connections disabled before you leave.

Which devices can store Hulu downloads?
Phones and tablets
Mobile devices and tablets are the likely destination for Hulu offline downloads, but model and operating-system support still matters. Confirm your specific device against Hulu’s device list, iOS guidance, or Android guidance, then check whether the title shows a download control in the app.
Smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles
Hulu lists streaming support for platforms including Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, selected smart TVs, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. That is a list of places to stream—not evidence that those devices can store offline downloads. Hulu’s device information should not be read as a download-compatibility list.

Mac and PC
Hulu supports browser streaming on Mac and PC through Hulu.com, but that does not establish offline-download support on a computer. Do not count on a browser download or treat an unofficial downloader as a supported workaround.
Why the Download button may be missing or a download may fail
- The title is not eligible: Streaming rights vary by title and can change. Check another episode or movie; the absence of a download control usually means that item is not available offline through your current setup.
- Your plan may not qualify: Hulu’s publicly available plan wording does not confirm every plan’s download eligibility. Verify the exact subscription with Hulu.
- You are using a playback-only device: A TV, browser, console, or streaming stick may play Hulu without supporting downloads.
- The app or device is out of date or unsupported: Update the app and check Hulu’s supported-device guidance.
- There is not enough storage: Free space and try again. Download size varies with runtime, quality, encoding, audio, and device; Hulu does not establish a single file-size estimate here. Download one episode first if you need to gauge space.
- The content belongs in another app: Bundle and add-on libraries can be split among services. Hulu notes that bundle content may require separate apps, and some HBO Max content is available only in the HBO Max app.
- You are outside the supported region or the title’s rights changed: Availability can depend on location, account authorization, and current licensing.
If a title that should qualify still will not download, try another downloadable title, switch to reliable Wi-Fi, restart the app and device, and reconnect to refresh account authorization. If the issue persists, use Hulu’s support contact options.

Hulu downloads are not the same as Live TV DVR
Hulu + Live TV includes cloud DVR recording, but a recording is not the same as an offline download. Hulu says DVR recordings can be stored for up to nine months; that describes cloud storage, not an exported file or guaranteed playback without internet. Should you choose Hulu for offline viewing?
Hulu can suit travelers and commuters who use a supported mobile device and are happy to watch the titles Hulu makes downloadable. It is a poor fit if you need every show offline, want permanent files, rely on a laptop or TV for downloads, or expect Live TV recordings to work as portable offline copies. Check your plan and a few titles in the app before making offline viewing the reason you subscribe.
