Other Sky services have their own rules.
Before buying a streaming device, identify your territory, exact Sky product and TV platform. “Sky Go,” Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream and NOW are separate services with different apps, rights and device support.
First identify which Sky service you use
Search results often combine separate products. Confirm all of the following before following casting instructions:
- Country or territory: UK, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, Italy or elsewhere.
- Account and app: Sky Go, Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream or NOW.
- Source device: Android phone or tablet, iPhone or iPad, Windows PC or Mac.
- Television destination: built-in Chromecast, separate Chromecast, Apple TV, AirPlay television, smart-TV operating system, console or Sky box.
A page on sky.co.nz describes Sky New Zealand, not Sky UK. UK Sky Community discussions specifically warn about this mix-up: UK casting guidance and New Zealand device guidance.

Chromecast: the supported New Zealand method
Sky New Zealand officially supports casting from its Android and iOS apps to Chromecast 3 and Chromecast Ultra. The same support page warns that a television’s built-in Chromecast may not be detected, so a separate supported Chromecast can behave differently from an integrated receiver.
- Install or update the Sky Go app on an Android or iOS phone or tablet.
- Connect the phone or tablet and Chromecast to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Sky Go and start the programme.
- Tap the Cast icon and select the Chromecast.
- Confirm playback on the television.

If the Cast icon is missing
- Confirm that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, without guest-network isolation.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy or network-filtering service.
- Update Sky Go, restart the app, and reboot the Chromecast and television.
- Check that you are using the New Zealand Sky Go app and account, not a UK or other regional edition.
- Test a separate Chromecast 3 or Chromecast Ultra if the television has built-in Chromecast.
- Try another programme; rights can differ between titles.

AirPlay: supported in New Zealand, not guaranteed elsewhere
For Sky Go New Zealand, the official procedure is to play a programme on an iPhone, iPad or supported Mac browser extension and send it to Apple TV. The documented destinations are Apple TV HD (fourth generation) and Apple TV 4K.

- Turn on Apple TV and connect it to the television.
- Put the Apple device and Apple TV on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Start a programme in Sky Go.
- Tap the AirPlay control in the video player.
- Select Apple TV or the compatible AirPlay receiver and enter the code if prompted.

UK iPhone users should not infer support from the fact that their television or Apple TV supports AirPlay generally. UK community reports describe Sky Go video becoming blank or grey during AirPlay attempts: UK Sky Community AirPlay report. Treat that symptom as a possible external-display restriction, not automatically as a faulty Apple TV or Wi-Fi network.
Why phone screen mirroring is different
App casting sends a playback session through a control that the streaming app has implemented. Screen mirroring reproduces the whole phone or tablet display. A television can support the second method while Sky Go blocks its protected video layer.

Consequently, mirroring may connect successfully while showing a black or grey video, or playing audio without a picture. Samsung describes casting from a cast-enabled app and screen mirroring as separate functions, normally requiring both devices on the same Wi-Fi network: Samsung’s screen-mirroring explanation.
Android “Cast screen,” Samsung Smart View and iPhone Screen Mirroring are not proof that Sky Go permits playback. Use an in-app Cast or AirPlay button where the local Sky service officially provides one.

Can HDMI connect Sky Go to a television?
HDMI is a display connection, not a guarantee that a streaming service will output video. Restrictions vary by territory, device, browser and programme.
- Sky New Zealand: its official device page says HDMI output is unavailable because of content-rights restrictions and directs customers to Chromecast instead.
- Sky Italy: Sky says external-display AirPlay and mirroring are not supported.
- UK Sky Go: do not assume every HDMI combination is blocked, but do not assume it will work either. If an adapter or laptop cable connects while playback is black, the relevant app, browser or content-protection system may be preventing external output.
Do not use capture cards, modified apps or bypass tools to defeat these restrictions. A supported native app, console or Sky device is the legitimate remedy.

Checking a smart-TV app
- Open the television’s official app store.
- Search for the exact Sky app available in your country.
- Check the publisher, country and required TV operating-system version.
- Confirm that your Sky account and subscription qualify.
- Install only the official listing; do not sideload an unofficial package.
A television that supports Sky in Switzerland does not automatically support UK Sky Go. Swiss Sky lists selected Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Android TV/Google TV, Apple TV and local TV boxes. It also says some older Swiss smart-TV app support ends on January 1, 2027, with Chromecast or AirPlay alternatives; that policy is not a UK announcement.
Apple TV: native app versus AirPlay
The UK App Store listing currently identifies Sky Go for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV: UK Sky Go App Store listing. Installing a native Apple TV app is different from AirPlaying an iPhone or mirroring a Mac. Availability can change with territory, Apple TV generation, tvOS version and account type, so check the local App Store on the Apple TV itself.
Alternatives when mobile casting fails

Sky Go Extra allows additional devices, including phones, tablets, laptops, Xbox and PlayStation, under eligible UK subscriptions. Sky describes it as associated with some Multiscreen, Sky Glass and Sky Stream Whole Home packages, while some Sky Q customers can pay separately: Sky Go Extra details. It is not described as a universal Chromecast, AirPlay, HDMI or mirroring entitlement.

Sky Go is included for eligible Sky TV customers rather than being a generally independent free service. Channel and programme access follows the subscription, territory and device. Sky’s channel list documents package and UK/Republic of Ireland differences: Sky Go channel list. The UK App Store listing also warns that content varies by device and that some live programmes may be unavailable.
Symptom-by-symptom troubleshooting
No Cast or AirPlay button
Check the country-specific app, account, programme eligibility and app version. If the local service does not implement casting, no Wi-Fi setting can create the missing control.
Receiver not found
Put source and destination on the same non-isolated Wi-Fi network, disable VPNs temporarily, update firmware and restart both devices. For New Zealand Sky Go, test a separate Chromecast rather than a built-in receiver.
Black or grey video, or audio without video
Play the programme directly on the phone first, then try another title. If direct playback works but the external screen is blank, stop mirroring and use an official app-cast control. The result may reflect content protection rather than a defective cable or television.
Playback stops after a few seconds
Update Sky Go and the destination device, remove VPN or proxy services, check network stability and test another programme. Persistent failure means the app, account, territory or title may not support that output path.

Login or “programme unavailable” error
Verify that the subscription, app and territory match. Channel, live-event, rental, download and third-party-channel restrictions can differ from ordinary on-demand playback.
Check compatibility before buying hardware
Do not buy Chromecast, Apple TV, an HDMI adapter or a new television solely because a generic guide says Sky Go can be cast. First confirm your country, Sky Go edition, app platform and whether the app displays an official Cast or AirPlay control.
- Google Chromecast and Google TV hardware can help where the local Sky app officially supports Chromecast.
- Apple TV 4K may suit a service with native Apple TV or documented AirPlay support.
- Sky Stream, Sky Glass and Sky TV equipment are direct television-viewing solutions, not casting accessories.
- NOW is a separate service and may suit someone who wants selected Sky-originated content without the full Sky ecosystem.
Hardware cannot override an app’s regional rights or external-display restrictions.
The practical decision
- If your local Sky Go app shows an official Cast or AirPlay button, follow that service’s documented procedure.
- If the button is absent, do not substitute generic screen mirroring and assume it is equivalent.
- Use a native local app, supported PlayStation or Xbox app, Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream or another officially supported route.
- If you want Sky content under a different subscription model, compare NOW separately rather than treating it as Sky Go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cast Sky Go from an iPhone or Android phone?
Only where that territory’s Sky Go app officially provides Cast or AirPlay support. Sky New Zealand documents both; UK Sky users should not assume mobile casting is supported.
