Yes. Once a YouTube gaming livestream has finished and an archive is available, you can add chapters by putting timestamp-and-title entries in the video description. YouTube’s instructions for manual video chapters require the list to begin at 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and give each chapter a minimum length of 10 seconds. These are chapters on the archived video—not chapter markers for a new live rerun.
How to add chapters to a gaming livestream archive
- Wait for the archive. After the stream ends, confirm that YouTube created a video archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local copy as a backup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Open the archived video in YouTube Studio. Find the video and edit its description. YouTube’s chapter workflow uses a list of timestamps and titles in the video description. The instructions are for videos generally; YouTube does not separately guarantee chapters for every livestream archive.
- Add a valid manual chapter list. Start at
00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make sure every chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. Add a short, accurate label after each timestamp. YouTube documents these requirements in its video chapters instructions. - Save and check the watch page. Confirm that the chapters appear on the progress bar and that the labels match the moments in the VOD. Viewers can navigate using the progress bar or the chapter title in the player; chapter information is also available through the description. See YouTube’s chapter and seeking guidance.
For example, a gaming VOD description could use this format. Replace the illustrative labels and times with real moments from the recording:

No—not as live timeline chapter markers. The timestamp instructions apply to a video description. If you broadcast recorded gameplay as a new livestream, timestamps in the original VOD’s description do not establish chapter navigation for that new broadcast. Add chapters to the resulting archive after it is available and its description can be edited.
Automatic chapters are not a dependable substitute: YouTube says not every video is eligible and not every eligible video receives them. If you add manual timestamps, they take precedence over automatic chapters. Check YouTube’s instructions for adding chapters with timestamps for the current requirements.

Chapters and live DVR are different

YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, and that some devices or older app versions can have lower limits. Turning DVR off prevents viewers from seeking back during the live broadcast, but does not necessarily prevent them from watching the full recording after it becomes available. When chapters do not appear
- The archive is missing: Confirm the stream ended and check YouTube Studio. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured, so use a local recording when preserving the session is important.
- The manual list is invalid: Check that the first entry is
00:00, there are at least three entries, timestamps ascend, and no chapter is shorter than 10 seconds. - The markers show on the wrong moments: Recheck each time against the finished VOD, not the planned stream schedule, then save the corrected description.
- You expected chapters during the live broadcast: Description-based chapters are for the video/archive. For navigation while the stream is live, viewers use DVR when it is available; it is not the same feature.
- You expected YouTube to add them automatically: Automatic chapters are not guaranteed, even on eligible videos. Use manual timestamps when you need defined sections.
