The key limit: vMix describes this as basic 24/7 streaming, not a system for scheduling a full TV-style lineup by time of day.
Choose the right vMix playback mode
For a continuous sequence of documentary files, the choice is between List and PlayList. Use List when you want one input to play a collection of media files in sequence; use PlayList when you want vMix to switch among multiple inputs.
List: sequential local files in one input
Add your video or audio files to a List input, enable Auto Next so playback advances to the next item, and enable Loop to return to the beginning after the list finishes. vMix says List does not require all videos to be loaded at once, which can reduce the resources involved compared with loading each file as a separate input. PlayList: a sequence of vMix inputs
Use PlayList to automate switching between inputs already configured in vMix. Enable its Loop option to restart the playlist after it completes. Individual items can have their own starting position, duration, transition and transition time. A PlayList is linked to the active preset in which it was created, so retain that preset with the setup. Details are in vMix’s scheduling guidance.

Neither option creates a time-of-day schedule—for example, a lineup that starts different programmes at fixed clock times. vMix distinguishes basic looping, where videos need not play at specific times, from full 24/7 television programming automation. Its documentation also describes vMix as primarily designed for streaming single events.
Connect vMix to YouTube Live
vMix supports a YouTube Live destination and a Custom RTMP Server destination. For a custom RTMP setup, enter the destination URL and stream key provided by the streaming service, then configure the stream quality and check the stream status. See vMix’s streaming settings documentation.

- Choose the destination. Use vMix’s YouTube Live workflow, or select Custom RTMP Server if you are entering a provider’s RTMP details.
- Set the stream details. For the custom route, enter the RTMP URL and stream key supplied by the provider. For YouTube Live, follow the current prompts in vMix and YouTube.
- Start and verify. Confirm that vMix reports a streaming connection and that the intended live stream is receiving video on YouTube.
vMix’s YouTube guide describes signing into the account, creating a stream or selecting an event, and starting the stream. It was last updated in 2021, so exact labels may have changed; follow the current screens. The guide says ending the stream in vMix also ends it on YouTube. See vMix’s YouTube Live setup guide.
Check a Windows VPS before relying on it
Having Windows installed does not by itself mean a VPS is suitable. vMix is Windows-only; its current hardware page lists Windows 10/11 in its requirements table. Verify the actual virtual graphics and network configuration before building an unattended channel around it.

- Graphics acceleration: vMix’s published hardware table specifies a dedicated DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics card as a minimum and recommends a dedicated NVIDIA card with at least 2 GB of memory. The provider’s virtual display may not expose the required graphics capability or drivers. Graphics speed affects how many inputs, outputs and simultaneous production tasks are possible. Check vMix’s supported hardware requirements.
- Windows and drivers: Confirm the VPS supports the required Windows environment and lets you install or use compatible graphics drivers. Ask the host how its virtual GPU or display is presented to Windows rather than assuming a basic remote desktop display is enough.
- Outbound bandwidth: The VPS needs persistent upload capacity appropriate to the stream quality selected in vMix, with additional headroom for network variation. vMix’s streaming documentation identifies internet connection quality as a factor and provides streaming-quality settings.
- Remote administration: Make sure you can access the VPS to configure vMix and respond to a stopped stream, application issue or host maintenance.
- Operational recovery: The cited vMix documentation establishes playback and streaming capabilities, but does not promise unattended recovery from Windows updates, crashes, connection loss or VPS host maintenance. Plan monitoring and a way to restart the workflow separately.
vMix’s published requirements do not certify a particular VPS provider or configuration. Ask the provider to confirm Windows support, GPU and driver access, continuous outbound streaming, and remote-console access before committing.
Common problems and what to check
- The videos stop instead of continuing: Check that Auto Next is enabled for List playback and that Loop is enabled on the intended List or PlayList.
- The playlist switches to the wrong material or transition: Review the PlayList items’ assigned inputs, starting positions, durations and transitions. Confirm you are using the preset that contains the PlayList.
- vMix will not start or perform reliably on the VPS: Verify the Windows version, virtual graphics capability and driver access against vMix’s hardware requirements. A Windows VPS with only a basic virtual display may not meet them.
- The YouTube stream does not connect: Check the selected destination and, for Custom RTMP Server, confirm the RTMP URL and stream key match the provider’s current values. Review vMix’s stream status and quality settings, then check the VPS’s outbound connection.
- The stream ends when you stop vMix: This matches the behavior in vMix’s documented YouTube workflow. Avoid ending the vMix stream if the YouTube broadcast should remain live.
- The stream does not resume after a crash or disconnection: Do not assume looping provides recovery from a stopped application or lost network. Arrange monitoring and an operational restart path; vMix’s cited documentation does not establish automatic recovery for these failures.
Cost and planning
A Windows VPS is a service rather than a required physical purchase. The cost depends on the provider and the graphics, Windows and network capabilities you need; no particular VPS price or provider configuration is established here. Compare Windows licensing, virtual GPU and driver support, sustained upload capacity, uptime terms and remote-console access. Also account for the time and operational work required to monitor and recover a self-managed setup.
