Ubisoft says it will give at least 30 days’ notice and explain the account-specific criteria and steps to keep the account open. The present terms do not publish one universal inactivity threshold or clearly restate a 2023 exception for accounts with purchased PC games or active subscriptions, so do not assume a purchase on Ubisoft Connect, Steam, or a console automatically protects an account.
Why does Ubisoft close inactive accounts?
Ubisoft says inactivity closure helps it comply with privacy and personal-data retention rules. Its current Terms of Use 5.0 refer to accounts that meet “specific inactivity criteria” and say those criteria will be detailed in the notice sent to the affected account. The terms do not state a single duration that applies to every account.
The explanation is connected to the principle that organizations should not keep personal data indefinitely when it is no longer needed for its purpose. France’s data-protection authority, CNIL, says that for general commercial online accounts, deletion after two years without user action can be proportionate, and recommends warning users in advance. That is regulator guidance, not a universal legal deadline or a ruling on Ubisoft’s policy.
CNIL also identifies a relevant distinction for video-game and audiovisual services: an account can serve as a library for purchased digital content. Its guidance says, in translation, that providers may retain certain data after more than two years of inactivity when needed to guarantee continued access to purchased digital content. It suggests considering deactivation and archiving while preserving a route to reactivate access. These recommendations do not by themselves establish what Ubisoft must do in any individual case. CNIL’s guidance on data-retention periods was published September 18, 2025.

What happens if Ubisoft terminates an account?
Ubisoft’s Terms of Use say a terminated user can no longer use Ubisoft Services and Content and loses access to the account, game saves, and progression. They also say there is no credit or reimbursement for unused services, subscription time, points, or Ubisoft Virtual Currency. These are contractual statements; the terms separately recognize that applicable statutory consumer rights may still matter. They do not establish that every paid-game license is automatically void in every jurisdiction or circumstance.
Ubisoft’s separate voluntary account-closure guidance lists loss of access to Ubisoft games owned on Ubisoft Connect PC and Ubisoft games on linked platforms, as well as progression, online services, outstanding Ubisoft Store pre-orders, and associated account data. It describes a 30-day suspension before permanent closure, during which the deletion can be cancelled. Once the account is permanently closed, Ubisoft says it and its associated data cannot be recovered.

The Ubisoft privacy policy likewise describes account closure as a data-deletion request and says some limited personal data may still be retained where necessary for legal obligations, legal rights, or legitimate interests such as preventing fraud and protecting service security.
Do purchased Ubisoft games protect an inactive account?
In July 2023, PC Gamer reported Ubisoft’s clarification that accounts containing purchased PC games or an active Ubisoft subscription were not eligible for inactivity deletion at that time. The report also attributed to Ubisoft a strict assessment based on activity, library, duration of inactivity, and subscription status. Ubisoft said then that it had never deleted an account inactive for less than four years, and the report described three emails sent over a 30-day period before permanent deletion. Those are historical statements reported in 2023, not a current published threshold. PC Gamer’s 2023 report is the source for that clarification.

The current Terms of Use 5.0 do not repeat that clear purchased-PC-game or active-subscription exemption. The voluntary closure help page is not an inactivity-policy statement, either. The current evidence therefore does not establish whether Steam purchases, console-linked games, purchases from other storefronts, or other entitlements exempt an account today. A game purchase and account status are related questions, but the terms do not support a blanket guarantee about every paid license in every location.
What should you do if you receive a closure notice?
- Read the notice carefully. Ubisoft’s terms promise at least 30 days’ prior notice and say it will explain the consequences, the specific inactivity criteria, and how to keep the account open.
- Use the account-specific steps within the stated window. Do not rely on an old inactivity threshold or assume that simply owning a game on another storefront will stop closure.
- Ask Ubisoft Support if a purchase or subscription is relevant. If your library includes Ubisoft Connect, Steam, console-linked, or other entitlements, ask how the notice applies to those specific purchases and keep the response.
- For voluntary closure, review the losses before confirming. Ubisoft’s guidance describes a 30-day cancellation period after closure is initiated; after permanent closure, the account and associated data cannot be recovered.
How to interpret the “block access” concern
Account inactivity closure is not the same as Ubisoft separately ending a game’s service or online feature. The immediate issue in an inactivity notice is whether the account that links the user to Ubisoft Services and Content remains open. Ubisoft’s terms and closure guidance warn that access and progression may be lost following termination, but the documents cited here do not settle the treatment of every storefront’s purchase or every local consumer-law claim. If you are comparing an account policy with another platform’s, check the trigger, what activity resets it, treatment of subscriptions and third-party purchases, notice period, data and access lost, and any reactivation window.
