A secondary explainer from Sideshow Collectibles says Thor can “fly and levitate,” but that is a summary, not a primary Marvel statement establishing that he can fly without Mjolnir in every continuity. Mjolnir’s association with flight is clear; whether it is indispensable in a specific story requires more direct evidence.
What Marvel’s issue descriptions establish
Thor (2014) #1: a changed status
Marvel’s listing for Thor (2014) #1, published October 1, 2014, describes Thor as weakened and unworthy while Mjolnir lies on the moon. That establishes a story in which Thor’s condition and access to the hammer have changed; the listing does not say whether he can fly without it.

Marvel’s listing for Thor (2020) #16, published August 25, 2021, frames the story around Thor confronting what he is without his hammer and warrior identity. The synopsis does not specify whether he can fly unaided.

In Marvel’s listing for Thor (2020) #19, published November 24, 2021, Mjolnir has gone missing. The listing establishes the missing-hammer premise, not the answer to the flight question.

How to judge a claim about hammerless flight
For a specific version of Thor, look for evidence from that story rather than relying on the general fact that he is often shown with Mjolnir while flying. The distinction matters because a scene may show the hammer carrying him, Thor propelling himself, or some other source of movement.
- Identify the continuity: main Marvel comics, another comics universe, or a film adaptation.
- Pin down the story period and Thor’s status: his condition and access to Mjolnir may differ from one story to another.
- Check the mechanism shown: a direct scene or official statement should clarify whether Mjolnir carries Thor, he flies or levitates himself, or another aid is involved.
- Weigh the evidence: a specific comic scene or official explanation is stronger evidence than a secondary explainer or an issue-catalog synopsis.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The cited Marvel listings provide useful context about Thor being weakened, facing life without his hammer, and losing Mjolnir. They do not explicitly say whether he can fly without it. The secondary summary supports the broader idea that Thor can fly or levitate in comic portrayals, but by itself does not prove a universal, continuity-wide rule about flying without Mjolnir. For a definite answer about a particular story, the relevant issue or an official explanation needs to show or state the ability directly.
