Yes. You can send a Streamlabs Desktop scene to YouTube Live through the software-encoder workflow without a capture card. For a video file stored on the same computer, the encoder connection itself does not require capture hardware. The important qualification: Streamlabs’ current official guides explain scenes and going live, but do not establish the exact current controls for adding, playing, or looping a local prerecorded video. Check those controls in your installed version before relying on a particular playback workflow.
Why a capture card is not required
A capture card brings an external video signal—such as footage from a console or camera—into a computer. In this scenario, Streamlabs Desktop runs on the computer and sends the scene to YouTube as encoder software. YouTube’s encoder instructions call for the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder; they do not make a capture card part of that setup. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and Streamlabs’ Desktop getting-started guide describe the platform and encoder workflows.
This answers the hardware question, not every detail of local-file playback. The official Streamlabs guides reviewed describe adding sources to scenes and going live, but do not document the current local prerecorded-video source type or its playback controls. Confirm that your installed version can load the file and provides the playback behavior you need; do not assume looping or unattended playback without checking.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
Streamlabs documents two ways to associate a YouTube event with a broadcast. Use the route that matches whether you want Streamlabs to create the event or already have one scheduled in YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option 1: Create the event from Streamlabs
- Sign in to YouTube from Streamlabs Desktop.
- Configure your scene and sources, then choose Go Live to create the event and start the broadcast flow.
- Before confirming, inspect the preview and audio mixer and make sure the intended scene is selected.
Option 2: Select an event created in YouTube
- Create the live event in YouTube’s dashboard.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, choose Go Live and select that YouTube event in the dialog.
- Confirm the selected event, scene preview, and audio before starting.
These are the two event paths described in Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide. YouTube’s encoder workflow also uses a server URL and stream key; if you configure the encoder connection manually, use the values shown for your YouTube stream and keep the key private. YouTube explains the encoder connection here.
Check the video source and its sound before going live
The scene needs a source that actually plays the intended file, and its audio must reach the stream. Because Streamlabs’ reviewed guides do not establish the local-file source’s current name or controls, use the app’s available source options and help for your installed version rather than following unverified menu instructions.

- Check the audio mixer while the file plays. Confirm that its sound is active, audible, and not unintentionally mixed with a microphone or other source.
- Check playback behavior before starting: confirm how the file starts and ends, and whether the app offers the repeat or unattended behavior you need. Do not assume the video loops.
- Verify the selected YouTube event and preview once more before going live.
Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start guide calls out sources, the mixer, preview, and output settings. It also notes that macOS desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software. If the file’s audio is missing on a Mac, investigate the audio-routing setup rather than buying a capture card.
Choose output settings that suit the source and connection
Streamlabs’ quick-start guide explains the relevant relationships: output resolution should be equal to or smaller than the base resolution; frame rate affects motion smoothness; higher resolution and frame rate require higher bitrate; and the encoder setting determines whether the GPU or CPU does the encoding. Choose settings your computer and upload connection can sustain, and check the resulting preview rather than assuming that a higher setting is automatically better.

The same guide lists minimum requirements of Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB RAM, integrated graphics, and 10 GB storage. Its recommended configuration is Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later, 16 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or higher, Nvidia RTX 20/30 series or AMD RX 5000/6000 series graphics, and a 512 GB SSD or larger. These are the requirements stated in Streamlabs’ guide, published May 20, 2026, not an independent compatibility test.
Troubleshoot before adding hardware
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The video is missing from the preview | Check that the intended source is present and selected in the scene. The current source type and local-file controls are not established by the reviewed Streamlabs guides, so consult the controls in your installed version. |
| The preview shows video but the stream has no file audio | Check the audio mixer while the file plays and confirm the correct source is routed. On macOS, Streamlabs says desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software. |
| YouTube starts the wrong event or no intended event is selected | Either create the event by signing in and going live from Streamlabs, or create it first in YouTube and select it in Streamlabs’ Go Live dialog. Confirm the event before starting. |
| The stream does not connect | For an encoder connection, check the YouTube Live server URL and stream key against the values shown for the intended stream. Keep the key private. A capture card does not replace a missing or incorrect encoder connection. |
| The video stops at the end of the file | Do not assume the file repeats. Verify whether your installed Streamlabs version has a repeat control and test the playback behavior before using it for a broadcast that must continue. |
