Sometimes—but it depends on what you mean by “edit.” Streaming software commonly captures and mixes audio, applies processing while recording, and saves a file. Editing a finished recording’s timeline is a separate capability. OBS documents capture, mixing, filters, and recording; Mixlr Studio describes a built-in editor for reviewing waveforms and making simple cuts and trims.
What counts as editing a podcast recording?
There are three different stages that are easy to confuse:
- Capture and mix: Bring a microphone and other audio sources into a live session or local recording, set levels, and combine the inputs.
- Process while recording: Apply effects or filters to a source as the audio is captured. OBS documents noise gate, noise suppression, gain, and VST plug-in support for its audio sources. These features process audio; they do not, by themselves, establish that OBS can edit a finished recording’s timeline.
- Edit after recording: Open a saved recording, inspect its waveform or timeline, remove or rearrange material, and save or export the result. This is post-production, and not every streaming application includes it.
So, if you need to improve a microphone signal while recording, streaming software may be enough. If you need to cut pauses from a finished episode, rearrange sections, or refine the final mix, check for an actual post-recording editor or use a separate audio editor or digital audio workstation (DAW).

These examples illustrate why “streaming software” is not a single feature category. The reviewed product materials support these distinctions for OBS and Mixlr Studio, not a universal claim about every streaming app.

How to choose software for a podcast workflow
Decide which stage matters most before choosing an app. For recording, confirm that it can capture your inputs, let you monitor and adjust individual sources, and save audio in a format and track arrangement that suit your workflow. If you need to edit the recording afterward, look specifically for:
- Waveform or timeline editing of a saved recording, rather than only live mixer controls.
- Cut and trim tools, and undo or redo for recovering from an edit.
- A way to preserve the original recording or save edits as a separate file.
- Export options that meet your publishing requirements.
OBS’s official guide also discusses interfacing with a DAW, which is one way to separate live capture from post-production. It does not establish which DAW is best; the right choice depends on the editing and export work you need to do.
