Not by itself. Owncast accepts an incoming broadcast over RTMP and serves it to viewers through HLS; its documentation does not describe Owncast as a playlist player, loop controller, or direct relay to YouTube. To run a playlist on YouTube around the clock, a separate playout and encoding or relay process must send a compatible stream to YouTube. Include Owncast only if you also want its separate self-hosted viewing destination.
What each part of the setup does
Think of the workflow as distinct roles, not a single Owncast feature:
- Playlist playout: a source or playout tool selects and repeats the recorded videos.
- Encoding or relay: a separate process packages and sends the live feed to the destination or destinations.
- Owncast, if needed: Owncast receives a broadcast over RTMP and processes it into HLS for its own viewers. Its guides cover incoming broadcasts, not playlist playback or automatic forwarding to YouTube. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation and video documentation explain those roles.
- YouTube: the encoder sends the feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key configured for the channel. YouTube documents this encoder workflow separately at its encoder instructions.
An Owncast HLS playlist URL is an output for compatible playback, not evidence that Owncast can take a playlist and rebroadcast it to YouTube. The Owncast HLS embed guidance describes that playback output.
Decide whether Owncast belongs in your pipeline
If YouTube is the only destination
Configure a playlist-capable playout source and an encoder or relay to send directly to YouTube. Owncast is not established as a required intermediary for this. The YouTube encoder needs the destination’s current stream URL and key, along with the intended privacy and stream settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you also want an Owncast viewing site
Send a compatible broadcast to Owncast for its own HLS viewers, and configure the YouTube destination separately. The official guides establish how to broadcast into Owncast and how to send an encoder feed to YouTube, but they do not provide a verified end-to-end recipe in which one Owncast input is automatically forwarded to YouTube. Choose a playout and relay design that explicitly supports the destinations you need, then test both outputs.
Owncast documents OBS/Streamlabs custom-RTMP broadcasting and an advanced FFmpeg output example. These show ways to send a source into Owncast; they are not playlist-loop tutorials or proof of YouTube relaying. See the Owncast OBS guide and Owncast FFmpeg guide.

Plan for continuous operation
A round-the-clock broadcast depends on every necessary component staying available: the playlist source, the process that plays and encodes or relays it, any Owncast server in the design, and the network connection. A service or startup configuration can help keep a process running in the background, but it is not an uptime guarantee. Owncast’s installation guide discusses installation and service operation.
- Run a full-duration test of the chosen playlist and destinations before relying on the stream.
- Monitor the playout process, encoder or relay, server, and network; decide how each will be restarted after a failure.
- Check Owncast server capacity if you include it. Owncast’s video processing and optional quality variants use resources; insufficient capacity can slow delivery or cause buffering. Test against the hardware available rather than assuming a particular server size.
- Keep a local recording or another deliberate archive plan if preserving the complete program matters.
Check YouTube eligibility and archive limits
YouTube’s current help guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Confirm eligibility and the destination’s settings in YouTube Studio before scheduling the broadcast; platform rules can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Archiving is separate from whether a live feed continues. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a statement that YouTube necessarily ends a live stream at 12 hours. If a complete archive is important, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a broadcast that may exceed that threshold. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limitation.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube receives no video: verify that the encoder is sending to YouTube’s own stream URL with the correct stream key. An Owncast RTMP address and key are for Owncast ingest, not a substitute for YouTube’s destination credentials.
- Owncast works, but YouTube does not: a successful Owncast broadcast does not establish that the feed is being relayed to YouTube. Check that a separate encoder or relay is configured for YouTube.
- The playlist stops or does not repeat: confirm that looping is configured in the playout tool. Owncast’s documented ingest role does not make it the playlist controller.
- Viewers see buffering or delayed delivery: check the source connection, network capacity, processing load, and any optional Owncast quality variants. Owncast notes that processing demand and server resources affect delivery.
- The full program is missing from the YouTube archive: check the stream duration against YouTube’s archive guidance and use a local recording when a complete copy is required.
