Can OBS Play Different Pre-Recorded Videos on a Schedule During a YouTube Live Stream?

OBS can play multiple prerecorded videos in playlist order during a YouTube live stream, but a playlist is not a clock-time scheduler. Here’s how to set it up and handle the YouTube event.

Yes—OBS can play multiple prerecorded videos in sequence during a YouTube live stream. Add them to an OBS VLC Video Source playlist, keep shuffle off for the listed order, and enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart when it reaches the end. That is a sequence, not a clock-time schedule: the official OBS documentation reviewed describes playlists and scene switching, but not a built-in scheduler for changing videos at specified times without an operator.

What “on a schedule” means in OBS

There are two different jobs that can sound like scheduling:

  • Play these videos one after another: use an OBS VLC Video Source playlist. The source plays the listed media files in sequence; shuffle changes that order, and Loop Playlist determines whether the list starts over when it ends. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents these playlist controls.
  • Automatically switch to a particular video at a set clock time: the official OBS feature documentation cited here does not establish a built-in clock-time scheduler for that. Do not assume a playlist will cue items at specified hours.

For a manually controlled change of video or layout, use separate OBS scenes and switch between them during the broadcast. OBS scenes and sources define what appears in the output; scene changes require an operator unless you add a separately verified automation method. See the OBS Sources Guide.

Set up sequential playback in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source to appear. Match the application architecture: the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Check OBS’s Media Sources instructions if the source is missing.
  2. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene you want to broadcast. Add the prerecorded files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
  3. Choose sequence and repeat behavior. Leave Shuffle disabled for the listed order. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should return to the first item after the final one. If you do not enable looping, the playlist will not restart as a repeating sequence.
  4. Check the scene output. Confirm the video fits the canvas and that its audio is present at the intended level. If each item needs a different crop, overlay, or layout, prepare individual scenes with their media sources and switch scenes manually rather than expecting the playlist to change layouts.

Schedule and start the YouTube live event separately

YouTube’s scheduled event and OBS’s media playback are separate parts of the workflow. YouTube schedules the live event; OBS supplies the outgoing program through an encoder connection. Scheduling an event in YouTube Studio does not itself start OBS or make OBS change playlist items at set times.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the scheduled live event and configure its stream connection.
  2. Use the event’s encoder details—the stream URL and stream key—in OBS. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to stream to your channel.
  3. Start the OBS stream before the event begins. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video. Follow the Live Control Room’s preview and Go live workflow for the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and streaming tips.

This advance-start recommendation is for preparing the live event. It does not mean OBS can autonomously switch playlist items at specified clock times.

Choose the playback method that matches your show

Need OBS or YouTube method What it does—and does not do
Play several videos in a fixed sequence VLC Video Source playlist Plays files in playlist order when shuffle is off; looping controls whether the sequence repeats. Requires VLC. The cited feature documentation does not establish clock-time cueing.
Choose when to change video or layout Media sources in separate OBS scenes Lets an operator switch the program to a prepared video/layout. Manual scene switching is the documented approach.
Show a promotional video before a scheduled live event YouTube scheduled-stream trailer A trailer appears on the watch page before the live broadcast; it is not a video inserted into OBS’s live program. YouTube says this feature is available to creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes, with trailer duration from 15 seconds to 3 minutes. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video Source is not available: install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
  • Videos play in an unexpected order: inspect the playlist order and turn off Shuffle if you need a fixed sequence.
  • The playlist stops after the last video: enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart.
  • The right video appears, but the wrong layout remains: a playlist changes media playback, not necessarily the scene layout. Prepare separate scenes and switch them when needed.
  • The YouTube event is scheduled but not receiving video: scheduling alone does not connect or start the encoder. Check the stream URL and key in OBS, start streaming, and confirm the preview in the Live Control Room.
  • The audience sees a trailer instead of the expected live program beforehand: YouTube’s scheduled-stream trailer is a pre-stream watch-page feature, distinct from the OBS program.
