It can make membership more appealing to viewers who want to participate, but there is no controlled evidence that switching a 24/7 stream to members-only chat increases paid memberships. Treat it as a testable perk—not a proven growth tactic. On a public stream, nonmembers can still watch; only members can post in chat. That differs from switching the stream itself to members-only, which prompts nonmembers to join if they want to keep watching.
What members-only chat changes—and what it does not
YouTube describes the setting this way: “During public live streams, you can make the chat members-only. Everyone can still view the live stream, but only members can post chats.” (YouTube Help.) In other words, the video remains public while the ability to send chat messages is reserved for members.
This is not the same as a members-only livestream, where viewing is restricted to eligible members. Nor is it the same as transitioning a public stream into a members-only segment: YouTube documents that transition as prompting nonmembers to join or upgrade to continue watching. The transition feature is limited to desktop streams that are not vertical. YouTube Help explains the access options.
Does members-only chat actually lead to more memberships?
That has not been established for 24/7 streams—or, in the available platform guidance, as a causal effect of members-only chat generally. It is plausible that a chat perk adds value for viewers who want to participate, but restricting public chat may also reduce participation from nonmembers. The right outcome depends on your audience, stream, and the other benefits you offer.

YouTube recommends designing perks around what viewers value, explaining the membership offer, and monitoring acquisition and retention in Studio. Its guidance supports making membership value clear; it does not show that chat gating itself causes more joins. (YouTube membership guidance.)
YouTube has reported that 20% of new members join after seeing promotion of members-only content on YouTube surfaces such as Home, Watch Next, Search, or a channel page. The statistic is not a conversion rate for members-only chat, does not specifically describe livestreams, and does not show that changing chat access creates incremental memberships. Creator stories can offer ideas, but they are not controlled comparisons. For example, one creator described members enjoying membership content and custom emoji increasing chat engagement; that account does not isolate members-only chat or report a membership conversion figure. YouTube creator stories are anecdotal evidence, not proof of a causal effect.

YouTube says public and members-only stream portions have separate performance data in Analytics. That helps distinguish the segments, but the reports alone do not prove what caused a viewer to join. YouTube’s transition guidance describes the feature and its analytics.

How to test members-only chat on a 24/7 stream
Use a time-limited test rather than changing the rule indefinitely without comparison. This is a practical experiment design, not a YouTube-tested formula.
- Check eligibility and the current control. Memberships must be enabled for channel members to receive membership-specific perks, and availability can depend on creator and account status. In YouTube Studio, open the livestream settings and look for “Enable members-only chat.” YouTube’s instructions and the available controls can change, so confirm them in your account before scheduling a test. (Current YouTube Help instructions.)
- Record a baseline. Choose comparable time windows with public chat open. Note the dates, stream traffic, viewer exposure, membership invitation shown, and membership acquisition and retention figures available in YouTube Studio.
- Announce and apply the test. Tell viewers when chat posting will become members-only and why. Avoid changing other membership perks or promotions in the same window if you want a more interpretable comparison.
- Compare similar windows. Rotate the setting across comparable days or time blocks, and record whether chat was open or members-only, traffic, prompts, and other changes. Compare joins in relation to viewer exposure; also watch for shifts in public chat participation, viewing activity, and return viewing.
- Review the result cautiously. Check acquisition and retention in Studio and, if you use a public-to-members-only transition, compare its separately reported public and members-only portions. A change occurring during the test is not by itself proof that the chat setting caused it.
For a more explicit join prompt, consider testing the public-to-members-only transition separately rather than treating it as the same intervention as chat gating. YouTube recommends trying that transition with an unlisted stream before using it publicly. The documented feature is for desktop streams that are not vertical. See YouTube’s transition instructions.

Make chat access one part of a membership offer
Chat access is easier to evaluate when viewers understand the broader value of joining. YouTube lists options including badges, custom emoji, members-only posts and videos, early access, members-only streams, milestone chats, recognition features, and creator-defined perks. Choose benefits that fit what your viewers want and that you can sustain; explain them clearly and monitor acquisition and retention. Do not confuse members-only chat with a member milestone chat. Eligible members can send one highlighted message per month beginning in their second consecutive membership month, and those milestone messages remain visible to all viewers. This can recognize members without restricting the public chat. YouTube Help describes chat features.
